I found these photos to be particularly compelling. Japan, photographed in the 1890's and then hand colored.

I find it interesting that the infernal fence that they have in the bamboo grove in Arashiyama was there long ago too - I guess it bothers me less now that I know its been there for over 100 years. Still don't like it though.

I've not seen many landscape images from Japan - this makes me wonder why not, and grateful for Andrew's fine work.
