Bayonet lens shade interchangeability

I know that I'm not the only one who is/has been confused/frustrated in trying to find a correct lens shade for a lens (film or digital camera) that uses a bayonet lens shade.

I've run across some good deals on lenses, but they often don't have the shade that it came with.

I know I can search for the exact replacement, but often that's not available and/or expensive -- but a lot of these bayonet shades are interchangeable.

For example, a bayonet lens shade for a Sigma 28-200mm f3.5/4.5 will also fit on a Promaster 28-200mm f3.5/4.5, as well as the Vivitar Series 1 version and the Rokinon model -- because they are all the same lens.

Does anyone has any tips on how to navigate this "plate of spaghetti" regarding bayonet lens shades?

Do any lens makers use the same type of bayonet on their shades?

The difficult thing about 'adapting' any shade to a specific lens is particularly at the Wide Angle end of the FL range...is the shade going to vignette the image on film?
I don't know of any easy computational tool that allows you to calculate the acceptability of a shade for a given FL...part of the complexity is that some front elements seem to be more 'rececessed' than others: given the same 24mm FL in two lenses, one is more recessed than the other, how does one compute AOV vs. the distance that the front edge of the hood protrudes?

There are three problems with swapping lens hoods

Diameter
Mount
Sufficient or insufficient coverage

These factors make lens hood swapping harder to find successful substitutes.

I understand that you can't slap a lens shade for a 28-100mm on a 35-200mm, but is there a way to GUESS if a shade from a Tamron or Sigma or Quantaray 28-90mm f3.5/4.5 (for example) might fit on any other 28-90mm f3.5/4.5 lens? Or is it simply trial and error? There are lots of lens shades for sale designated for a particular lens, but it probably fits on other BRANDS of lenses as well.

If the diameter and mount works, then there is a good chance that a 28mm lens hood from a different manufacturer would have the same field of view, and therefore a good chance it will work.

I haven't found many bayonettes that are interchangeable, but if I were looking I'd start with the filter threads. If one lens has a 49mm filter, and the other has a 67mm filter, I'll assume they won't be interchangable. Most lenses with bayonettes that I've seen have them just on the outside of the same ring that has the filter so the filter size will directly influence it. If they're both 49mm anbut they don't fit, I'd look to see if some careful filing on the hood side will allow them to match up.

I've collected a number of random bayonet shades from sale/giveaway tables in hopes of ending up with one that would fit one lens or another. What I ended up with is a random collection of bayonet shades that don't fit any lens I have.
So, my solution has been to buy the genuine article, either used from one of the usual suspects, or new if I can't find a used one and want it badly enough.
For a lot of lenses a screw mount would be a good solution, though for the lenses that came with "petal" shades, especially zooms, the OEM is probably best. There are a lot of clone hoods
around on ebay which I've never tried, but are likely fine.

Thanks. That's kinda, sorta what I've seen too. There sure are a lot of nice lenses for sale without the bayonet lens shade, and at good prices -- but the original lens shades cost almost as much as the lens!!!

There are bayonet lens hoods made by third party companies for specific lenses. One would need to do some research before buying.

With 3d printing you should be able to make good copies of oem lens hoods. Adapt them to thread mount because the click tabs may be hard to reproduce.

Would there be a market for these custom hoods?
