Ok folks, here's the deal. We'll meet and park our cars in front of the Conservatory in Druid Hill Park at 9 AM. We'll wander down to the lake and back, as the Conservatory doesn't open until 10. The Conservatory has some fantastic plants, including a massive Agave plant in the desert conservatory. They have an Orchid room, great for folks into macro or color, and a formal garden outside. Good news for the large format and macro crowd- the Conservatory permits tripods inside. It is also rarely busy, so you don't have to worry too much about the crowds getting in your way or tripping over your tripod.

Within a very short walk from the Conservatory there are several pavilions, monuments to William Wallace and Christopher Columbus, and the lake. The lake has a folly at one end (now closed for safety reasons) made to look like a moorish castle tower, and a stone pumphouse in the middle of the lake with cast iron railings. I'll post some scans when I get some prints made.

Around 11:30 we'll break for lunch. I'm saying that we shall all meet at Never On Sunday, a Greek place over on Charles Street, at Noon. It's low key, inexpensive, and not terribly busy, so there will be enough tables for us to take over and hang out for a while. This will be the opportunity for people to share prints and discuss their interests. If you have special dietary needs or you just hate Greek food, there are other options within walking distance. After lunch, we'll spend another hour or so taking in Mount Vernon Square, with a fantastic gothic church, the Washington Monument, and some victorian gardens. Weather, time and interest permitting, we can then go on to Cylburn Arboretum.

Cylburn Arboretum is worth an entire day in itself. The Arboretum is 178 acres of protected parkland in Baltimore City. There is the mansion itself, which is quite photogenic. The mansion grounds have numerous spots worthy of attention - a formal garden, marble lion statues, and acres of greenhouses. There are various trails through the woods marked for the species of trees and other plantlife that can be found. The grounds are open until 9pm daily.

Folks - I would appreciate a head-count of people coming so that I can figure out about the lunchtime logistics. If we're going to have 20+ people showing up, I'll try to find someplace where I can reserve us a private room instead of just mobbing somewhere and not being able to sit together. I'd also like to see who's bringing what kind of camera so we can work out plans for shooting - the pace of the day will certainly be dictated by the formats folks are bringing.

While as you know I won't be able to make it this time, I would caution against too many people at the Rawlings Conservatory, especially with tripods and big cameras. Three of us using view cameras was disruptive enough and they had low attendance that day because the weather was terrible. I suggest that if a lot of people show up that you take it in shifts - maybe you could lead a caravan of half the crew or so up to Clyburn while the other half shoots at the Conservatory. Then switch after lunch.

I intend to go back to both locations many times. If what they now consider a welcome novelty becomes a banned annoyance we will have poisoned the well, which would be a tragedy.

I won't be able to make this one, but I'll be sure to try and make the next one. Sounds like a good time.

I agree with Brett Weston that anything within 50 ft. of the car is extraordinarily photogenic.

Scott,
Do you know what the weather forecast is for the area and I am assuming that if it rains we will cancel.

Bill

Not necessarily. Rawlings Conservatory is all under roof. It poured rain the whole time we were there, but the light was gorgeous. By the time Scott and I had driven up to Clyburn Arboretum after lunch, the rain had stopped and there was a beautiful fog. I can't go this weekend, but if I were I'd pray for bad weather so that I can photograph in such beautiful light.

At this time the forecast calls for "occasional showers possible-highs in the mid-60s".

Just wanted to remind you about the get-together tomorrow. We're meeting at the Rawlins Conservatory in Druid Hill Park at 9 AM. Best way to get there is to come in to the city on MLK Jr Boulevard. Follow MLK Jr Boulevard almost to its end. Turn LEFT on McCulloh Street, and then keep going on McCulloh. Take McCulloh past North Avenue (It will make a slight dogleg before it crosses North Avenue), and then follow it across Druid Park Lake Drive. You will see the Conservatory on your right. At 9 AM there should be parking available in front of the Conservatory, or along the drive into the park immediately adjacent. We'll spend the morning in and around the conservatory and the lake, then break for lunch around 11:30. We'll go downtown, meet at Never On Sundays (a casual greek restaurant). This may or may not be the final watering hole as far as the food, but it makes for a convenient meeting point. Never on Sundays is at 829 North Charles Street. We'll kick around the neighborhood for a little while, then head out to Cylburn Arboretum, which is located at 4915 Greenspring Ave, Baltimore, 21209, where we'll finish up the day.
