Don't have your tripod head, but looking at my Manfrotto 168 head, I can see traces of what looks like HMP (high melting point) lithium grease inside. The only way to open the 168 head is to unscrew 3 Allen (hex head) bolts on the underside (I would be prepared to catch various springs and washers which may come flying out as you do this). A light smear of grease should be all that is required, by dismantling the head you will be able to wash the parts in petrol and be sure to get rid of all the sand!
