I have recently gotten a Contax RTS with 2.8/85 Sonnar and 2.8/25 Distagon and am looking for something to carry this small outfit (with a couple of rolls of film). Traditional bags are going to be much too large for what I have in mind with this kit and pockets too small. Any suggestions?
Strongly recommend the Domke F6 bag. possibly acquire also a two-channel insert to substitute. This is what I use for a similar combination.
Keep the original four channel insert, for expanded,or alternative kit.
CourierWare makes small bags. I purchased their "mini" and had them add an extra pocket, to make three. I'm not sure how big your camera is, but I can fit camera and lens in one pocket, and a couple lenses in the other two. I put a Zeiss Ikon ZI kit in it.
Congrats on the new kit too. And definitely get the 50 Planar, the 1.7 is just fine. I've had both the 1.4 and 1.7 and while the 1.4 is better made the 1.7 is no slouch and in some tests is sharper. Character-wise I found them similar. 1.4 is so expensive now though.
I highly recommend Domke bags as well. They're rugged canvas, and they visually disappear instead of screaming, "LOOK AT ME, I'VE GOT CAMERA GEAR". I have a small one, I forget the exact model, but I keep my Contax G1 and G2 bodies, 21, 28, 45 and 90 lenses, a TLA 20 flash, and maybe 10 rolls of film in it when I'm on the road.
For SLR I used small black Roots backpacks (these are padded with inserts and very simple, not the digital monstrosity with 15 pouches). They are very comfortable, strong fabric, unobstrusive and the inserts make it convenient to store and grab once you open partially the bag.
If you are interested but cannot find one (they are discontinued), I still have two and I could part with one since I have sold all my 35mm gear.
Domke are also very nice (I have many) but I find that messenger type bags are more tiring for the back after an hour.
