The meter on my late Photomic is randomly dead until the aperture ring is fully rotated (not jumpy), and sometimes requires pressing the battery check button as well.

What would cause this?

off the top of my head, in order of most likely to less likely...
1. weak battery
2. corrosion in the electrical contacts - battery compartment or where the finder mates to the body
3. corrosion else where in the electrical circuit.

I will try some fresh batteries. The terminals are clean and shiny.
