FP4+ grain is large. Pan F offers the tightest grain with a very smooth gradation. Works best in PMK Pyro IMHO. Still doing some testing.
 

TMX 100 4x5 (Develop in D76)
 
First choice would be fp4 after that, Acros, after that trix. Since those were not my choices, I choose the r3 ( a tad overpriced. )
 
Just to clarify, if I had to go with one film, and one film only, it would be FP4 because it is very versatile. I always have Efke/Adox PL25 on hand, because it is great at what it is, and if it had to be a film on the list, that would be my choice. There is no magic bullet. Different films are suited to different things. Thats why we have them. I like J&C pro 100 in 8x10. HP5 is also grand for LF if you need speed, and some other films I haven't tried are probably really good as well.
