b&w brown/black toning

Any ideas for deep brown/black (chestnut color) toning? Best results have been selenium/potassium iodide bleach/then gold on Forte paper, but this is erratic and a bother. Any developer/paper/toner combination for a hint of solid brown?

Olive brown and very rich & deep is done with IT-8, an Ilford published formula where you bleach in a Dichromate/HCl solution and re-develop in a Pyrocatechin staining developer. This toner unlike most others actually intensifies the image.

Nelson Gold toner; direct toner, not the usual blue/grey tones one normally associates with gold toners but rich brown's with the right paper combo. Personally haven't used it for a number of years but worked beautifully with papers like Agfa Brovira.

If you're not already familiar with it, get a hold of Tim Rudman's The Photographer's Toning Book. It's available new and used from Amazon. Mine came recently, and it's simply a wealth of answers, explanations, and information about toners, and their effects, as well as formulations, illustrations, cautions, and precautions. It's an indispensable resource.
