Autumn 2008 Meeting Accommodation

That would appear to be a relatively simple one. Try and get your tongue around this one which is on Anglesey and is the longest place name in Britain.

Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch ( pronunciation)

The only bit that seems meaningful is silio

Welsh is far more phonetic than English so you can get away with a dozen or so "rules".

Some are:
"ff" = English "f";
"f" = English "v";
"ll" = Hmmm... well, make the "l" shape with your tongue and then blow - a bit like aspirating a "h" but with the mouth ready to say "l"..
"dd" = "th"
"c" is always hard as in "Car", "Catch" etc
"ae" is a diphthong = English the "i" sound in "Like"
"w" = "oo" as in "spoon"
u - "ee" as in "weed".
"r"s are trilled.
"y" = awkward.. ."i" in "cliff" if in the last syllable, otherwise as ""uh". Y on its own (= "and") is "uh" e.g Betws-Y-Coed (Betoos-uh-Koed)... Mynydd (mountain) is a good word to remember how to pronounce ("munnith") as it incorporates both "y" sounds and the "dd" = "th".

llanfairpwllgwyngyll and Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch are one and the same. The longer name was created as a tourist attraction/stunt in Victorian times... I know Llan is "church" but that's all I can translate on my own...

I'm sure one of our Welsh brethren can correct any of that that I got wrong...

Cheers, Bob.

Yeah, but first you have to learn the Welsh alphabet.

The last time I had to fill in a customs declaration form at the post office I found it was in two languages - Welsh and French. Delphine, you'll be fine.

According to Wikipedia (so it must be right) "The name is Welsh for 'St Mary's church in the hollow of the white hazel near to the rapid whirlpool and the church of St Tysilio of the red cave"' and yes, it was created as a Victorian publicity stunt . It's also the longest single word .com domain name.

I take it we are going for the 3rd to the 5th Oct dates?

If so - who else is going to the Ilford factory on the Friday?

And - is anyone else thinking about coming back Monday?

Thanks

Martin

I am going to Ilford factory visit, hoping to come back on the Monday.
This said, I need to work out my transportation.

I am suspecting that the big majority of the Anglesey group is going to the Ilford factory tour for some reasons.

I'm going on the factory visit on Friday, I can give a lift from there to angelsey, and drop off on the way back at manchester, leeds or newcastle

Dee, I am also going to the Ilford factory tour on the Friday and coming back on the Monday

I can give you a lift part of the way - if you want

Coventry or the NEC Railway Stations would be best for me to collect you from & drop you off

I realise Geoff has already kindly offered to give you a lift - so its up to you - however I am at least heading in roughtly the right direction

Martin

I'm not going on the Ilford visit this year, I went last year.

I shall be traveling up to Anglesey Friday am, but my return date and destination depends on the weather! Who's arranging that?

Barry

Barry you are THE (weather) MAN

Northumberland weather was brilliant - if a little windy

If you didn't like the light then wait 5 mins & it would be completely different

Same again please

Martin

ps - bring the tow rope !

Thanks for your support Martin, I'll try to repeat (most) of the weather.

Dave, that's a real shame, I hope its not serious? You will both be missed.

Barry

I have just sent an email, booking myself into the Dead Link Removed for the Fri/Sat 3rd/4th October. Give the name of APUG in your booking, and if ten rooms are booked the discount will kick in.

Dave, that is bad news.

Hi,
Unfortunately I shall be giving the Ilford visit a miss as it is a good bit further north from Anglesey for us southerners from Cornwall. Sorry to hear Dave cannot make this one.

Neil.

I'm going to Ilford on the Friday and will probably be spending the following week in a cottage somewhere in the Lakes (well, if I'm going up all that way, I may as well make a week of it). Not sure yet if going up on Friday am or previous day and staying locally overnight.

Sorry to read that Dave, you will be missed - besides, it means I may have to talk to Frank or Barry over dinner now ... (Hmmm... thinks: wonder if I can have dinner in my room at the hotel? Whoops, did I type that out-loud? Ah well, no one will notice, they never listen to me anyway... Damn! - I'm still doing it...).

Cheers , Bob.

I'm coming back to the cold, from overseas, and will try and fit in the Anglesey trip as well. Will possibly fly into Ringway Airport the night before, I think that's the nearest airport to Mobberley

We shall insist that you do Bob!

I have just made my booking for Fri/Sat/Sun. I have taken the B&B option as there may be other opportunities for eating? However I understand there would be no problem in changing to the full board option if the majority choose that.

Neil.

Actually Neil it's, well sort of east a bit, about 2 hours from the Anglesey venue by fast Devonian Donkey; I think.

Email sent for a single room booking, bed / breakfast / evening meal.

Edit - They need credit card details to secure the booking. I'm sure I don't have to remind any of you lot that sending these through via unencrypted email would be a VERY BAD IDEA! (I've phoned mine through.)

Dave - That's a real bu@@er! You'll be sorely missed. An APUG Gathering just won't be the same without your incessant curmudgeonly grumbling! Hope it's nothing serious, mate.

Just got off the phone and I'm all booked in for bed, breakfast and evening meal.

Dave, sorry to hear you won't be able to make this one, you will be missed.

Dave,
Thanks for that, I had toyed with the idea of going but two hours on top of the rest of the drive didn't appeal. I'll probably go up and back through Wales, taking an extra couple of nights, and catch up on some long ago visited photo haunts ;-)

Neil.

Great news Dave that you can make it after all.

I have just booked up for the 3/4/5 (Dinner + B&B) and found the hotel super to deal with and very efficient. The lady also said I was the 6th person to book today so it looks as if we shall get our 10%

All the best,

Neil.
