Auto-rewind Issue

I haven't tried this myself, but it might be easier than using a film retriever:

Looks good, but I'm not sure that it will work for someone like Ralph who needs a technique that requires just a single hand.

I recently tried this, but it never worked for me. There was just not enough friction on the puller roll to grab and pull out the leader strip of the roll that had been rewound. I ended up using the piece of double-sided sticky tape on a waste strip of film. Even then, sometimes there was not enough friction/stickiness.

I have had both success and failure with that method.
The "Old Fashioned" metal film retriever works for me 98% of the time.
One of my cameras, i think it is my F2, REALLY cranks on the leader and bends it a lot.
THAT can be hard to retrieve as it will not climb the ramp of the retriever........i guess.
I always try to leave mine out so i can START The Reels in daylight.

I use the metal retriever with very good results too.

I wish I had one in every bag, even the medium format as I carry a Nikon FG to use with my Hasselblad kit, and I'm no above rewinding a partial roll of 135mm for another film, as needed.

A rare occurrence but it does happen and I only trust this tool to do the proper job.

Hello Ralph,
just ask the official Nikon Service in Germany whether they can reprogram the N70 for the leader-out option.
I know for sure - because Nikon service had done it for me and photographer friends of mine in the past - that this has been possible for the Nikon models
- F90 / F90X
- F80
- F100
- F5 (as the F5 has also the classic rewind crank for manual film rewind and is counting backwords when rewinding having the leader-out is always possible by manual film rewind).
But I am not sure concerning the F70. Just ask them.

The F6 has fortunately this option already built in: You can choose between the two options
- leader-in
- leader out
after automatic / motorized film rewind.
And as the F6 has also the classic rewind crank for manual film rewind and is counting backwords when rewinding having the leader-out is always possible by manual film rewind, too.
