I was always curious about this. Can someone post a link to an article about it if there is one?

I have many Tamron Adaptall and Adaptall II lenses as well as the mount adapters which go with them. They all provide auto diaphragm operation. I have heard that the adapters did not all work properly with Leica's SLRs and I can tell you that they definitely do not work properly with all Konica AR (Autoreflex) mount cameras. I have also had a problem with the aperture lever on Adaptall II K mount adapter for Pentax K. The Vivitar and Soligor T4 systems and the Vivitar and Tokina TX systems also provide auto diaphragm operation. Attaching the mount adapters to the lenses in these systems can sometimes be tricky. More than once I have found Vivitar and Soligor T4 and Vivitar TX lenses for almost nothing because the sellers couldn't figure out how to attach the mount adapters properly.

Thanks. Are the adaptall and adaptall 2 lenses and adapters interchangable?

You should be able to find all the information you could need about Adaptall lenses here:

Dead Link Removed

I have a few adaptall lenses with Olympus OM and Nikon F mounts and they all work flawlessly.

Yes, as far as I can tell. I've mixed the two freely in multiple mounts with no problems.

I'm not so sure about that. I used to have several Adaptall lenses with differing maximum apertures. When buying the mounts for Canon FD you had to buy the correct Adaptall FD mount for the max aperture of the lens it was to be used with. For a while I was using an F2.8 Adaptall FD mount with a Tamrom 105mm f2.5 lens. It certainly fits ok but I was told the lens would only open up to F2.8 and not f2.5. I know, b*gger all difference but I did finally track down the correct f2.5 Adaptall FD mount.

Tamron fixed this with the Adaptall 2 mounts for Canon FD. A single Adaptall 2 FD mount could be used on any Adaptall 2 lens for any FD body.

With regards to Canon FD I don't think you can swap Adaptall / Adaptall 2 mounts between lenses of different series due to the way the max aperture is signalled to the FD body. I never actually tried to put Adaptall 2 mount on Adaptall lens or vice versa. Can you actuall swap them at this level?

This may not be a problem with other camera manufacturers mounts. Depends on their exposure systems. Canon made it a bit more complex with shutter priority auto where the aperture in use is controlled from the camera body.

For the understanding of possible Adaptall-mounts issues on "auto-operation" one must differ between:

-) automatic diaphragma

-) open-aperture-TTL

-) shutter-priority auto-exposure

Konica AR:
-) Adaptall (-1): get the adapter with the right lens speed indicator
-) Adaptall-2: set at the adapter the right lens speed.

I got an K-AR adapter, but no resp. body, so I cannot verify but I do nor expect any issue.

Thanks. Are the adaptall and adaptall 2 lenses and adapters interchangable?

No.
Adaptall-1 lenses do not automatically indicate their speed. So already here the trouble would start.

Concerning max. aperture and open-aperture-TTL metering:
I do not see an issue, provided one follows my advices above.

Concerning shutter-priority AE:
I just do not know by lack of any Adaptall-1 lens.
But as shutter-priority AE was integral part of the FD-mount from the start, any other-manufacturer's lens designated as FD should support it. And all their fixed-mount FD-lenses did so.

Or with other words:
My idea is that the only difference between Adaptall(-1) and Adaptall-2 lenses is the way how the max. aperture is transferred from them to the camera (which also make their adapters different).

And this idea is confirmed by one of the few sites covering in extenso Adaptall lenses.
It would be great if this can be confirmed here to. By for instance someone using an Adaptall-1 lens on a Canon FD camera in the shutter priority mode.

I got all those various sources archived and this one is the one I just referred to above. But I rather like another source of confirmation.

Have you got this one, listing 76 different Adaptall 2 lenses? I had mentioned the other site not for its lens list, but because it offered some explanation about Adaptall vs Adaptall 2, and different camera mounts. This site provides only a list of Adaptall 2 lenses, with no information about mount diffferences.

Attaching the mount adapters to the lenses in these systems can sometimes be tricky.

I can only speak for attaching the Adaptall-2 ones.

It is important

-) to set the aperture scale at largest opening. Both, before attaching and taking off

-) to keep the aperture dial from turning whilst twisting the adapter, hold it with your static thumb if neccessary

-) to look at the locking lever whilst twisting, to see it coming up. One may check by trying to twist back the adapter

I experienced in one case one of the tabs slipping out of its corresponding recess whilst twisting the adapter. It had too much play. Take such tab off, bend it more over and remount it. It should just touch the circumference of the barrel when the adapter is mounted.

With the Konica adapter it is important to push in the buttoon at the adapter to make the tab move into the recess. The same at taking off the Adapter as a last step.

It is benefitial not to change adapters on the job, but to adapt all lenses at home if enough adapters are at hand.

I have heard that the adapters did not all work properly with Leica's SLRs

That is partially correct. They do not work with early Leica reflexes up to the R3, but they are OK from the R4 onwards. I had an R4s and it worked perfectly with that body, however the later bodies with the advanced electronics (R8 and on) may also have a problem.
