Last month I was make some experiment with different formulas like Atomal/Calbe A49. I use CD-1 because it available in my country. I'm really impressed with results. Some samples:

CD-1 + Ascorbate + Kodalk, Ilford HP5+ @400

CD-1 + Hydroquinone + Borax, Ilford HP5+ @400

I did some test with a CD too. Ortho Phenylene Diamine like in the W665 formulae. However here you have a speed loss of 1F stop. But the result is very fine grain. The interesting about your A49 and Ascorbate is the film speed: Still E.I. 400 with that HP5+ ?

Fomapan Creative 200 (135-36) in W665 E.I. 100

Thanks for posting this. Have you tried these with a slower film like FP4 or Pan F?

You made a good piece of research but CD-1 is not available everywhere.
btw the msds for ATM 49 appears different from the original Atomal formula which is as quoted in this thread:
http://www.photography-forums.com/agfa-atomal-formula-t93449p2.html

N-Hydroxyethyl-o-aminophenol used in original Atomal isn't available anywhere.

Calbe A-49 uses as developing agents:
N-N-diethyl-1,4-phenylendiammoniumsulfate = Kodak CD1 and
Hyroquinone
CD-1 is N,N-Diethyl-p-phenylenediamine sulfate, CAS: 6283-63-2. its still available.
CD-1 can be substituted (and I really substitute it) with N,N-Diethyl-p-phenylenediamine Hydrochloride, CAS: 2198-58-5 (also available).
CD-1 also can changed to CD-2 - N, N-bis (2-hydroxyethyl)-p-phenylene diamine Sulfate (CAS: 4327-84-8), but CD-2 need in 1.5-1.8 times more
you can try to use CD-3 or CD-4. can't test it because not available in my country
