atmosphere

how is it that you would describe a photograph that contains " atmosphere "
i've heard all sorts of things it supposedly means ... mood, tone, &c

whats it mean to you ?

This word is common in Russian language in terms of photography or place like bar, restaurant. One meaning is less complicated and in use to describe landscape picture. Another is for photography with people, usually in inner space.

Well hey, unless we're in space, there must be atmosphere!

I would lean toward adding an adjective to the word - mysterious, intimate, warm - to describe a mood. But maybe "aesthetic" could substitute for "atmosphere." Or maybe it's like porn -- "I'll know it when I see it."

Atmosphere and controlled colour saturation are prerequisites for my work and have been since my very early days (c. 1977).

"Atmosphere" can take on many meanings. For me, it must embody the time and place, compliment the image and even provide for aesthetics. Fog, snow, rain, the haze of the scorching outback here in Australia, the austral glow after sunset, the calm of a mirror-still body of water with clouds above... all this contributes to the atmosphere and "feel" of the image, and is something the skilled photographer will plan for and incorporate. Right now, on a day when it is 41°c outside (and that's in the second biggest city in Victoria, not the outback!!) the atmosphere could be described as "hot, oppressive", certainly devoid of the many attractive qualities that you would find in the outback (as long as you don't cook your film/camera/car/self into the bargain!).

Ethereal comes to mind.

A small pub or bar that has been there for years and is nicely "lived in" has atmosphere.
A bar in an aluminum and glass shopping mall doesn't and never will.
Atmosphere means that the space has a presence above and beyond the collection of things in it.
