I'm prepping a Spotmatic for sale here in Australia. New seals and battery for metering. Just got to run a test roll through it to check that it's running OK.

Interestingly that SMC Takumar on J Durr's camera above is not the period correct lens as the SMC lenses were designed for bodies that could do open aperture metering. There is a little pin on the lens mount which engages with the camera body to tell the camera what aperture setting has been set on the lens. I have both the SMC and Super Takumar 55mm f1.8 lenses.

Edit. Just noticed that my camera is an earlier Spotmatic, not the II. Serial No. begins 36. Perhaps the SMC lenses were fitted to the Spotmatic II as it was probably made in parallel with the open aperture metering bodies - Spotmatic F and ES models.

I believe this is correct. Note that lenses marked "Super-Multi-Coated Takumar" are earlier production ('71–'72, IIRC) and lenses marked "SMC Takumar" are later ('72 until the end of production). I have seen some Super-Multi-Coated Takumar lenses which did not have the extra fittings for open aperture metering but I believe ALL SMC Takumars were made for the open aperture metering bodies.

@AAlfano thanks for your explanation. The lens I have is marked Super-Multi-Coated Takumar 55mm f1.8. It has the fitting for open aperture metering so it is one of the 71-72 lenses. The Super Takumar is a nice performer so I expect this lens to be very similar. Hmm, which lens to sell with the Spotmatic, the period correct Super Tak or the later one? I'll probably leave it up to any potential buyer to decide.
