The January show at Vermont Center for Photography is Artists work like this by Bill Dixon

William Dixon’s photographs present extended portraits of artists and artisans from Southeast Vermont. Dixon expands the portrait by including not only the artist’s photograph but their products, studio, tools, and methods. Art is not a job but a life for these inspiring people.

Looking at an example of art in a window or on a wall, one sees the end of the creative process. However the studio is where the art happens. This is where the creative and abstract ideas of the artist are slowly molded into a tangible product. Whether this be an oil painting, a steel sculpture, a woolen shawl, or a bowl. This photographic study of nine local artists allows us to enter this studio space to go back in time to see the tools, the raw materials and the processes used in the creation of their art.
