I just received my first 100' roll of Arista Ultra 100. When I opened it (in a changing bag), I noticed that it was not on a reel/spool. Is this normal? Does the bulk roll just lie loose in the loader w/o scratching?

Bulk film usually comes warpped around a core, a spool without sides. A bulk loader usually comes with one of these as well, incase the bulk film does not have one.

With some rolls there is a larger core with a 1-inch hole in the center; in which case you can add a cylinder, 1 inch in diameter, 1-3/8 inches long, and bored to accept the axle in your loader. You get one of these at the end of an Ilford roll.

I haven't seen a roll with no core.

Fuji came on a spool with large discs on each side to contain the roll.

If that is the Arista Edu Ultra it does come on the larger black core that accepts 1-inch diameter inserts.

OK, it seems this was a false alarm. I put the loader in a changing bag, removed the bulk roll and it is on a rimless spool. I just bought a used Watson on APUG and it came w/o the cylinder. jmcd: Thanks for those dimensions. I'll make one that size.
Thanks guys, for your input.

The last roll of EFKE bulk film came without a core. (one of the Kodak books refers to that style as "Mandrel wound")

The ULTRA and Foma films seem to come on a "2 Inch" Core, with the 1 inch hole. Kodak generally uses a 1 inch core with a square hole, and as you noticed Fuji uses a "number 10" Aluminium spool.

The Kodak 1 inch core makes a great "adaptor" to hold the 2 inch cores. (Which Most Movie film also comes wound on)

cmacd123: BTW, The Ultra Bulk all comes without edge printing.

The name brand Foma also has no edge markings, in the 100-foot roll.
