I was afraid of that. Have you used it yet? Any problems?

A few weeks ago, someone sent me a Minolta 16 cassette from FFP. He thought I could help. He said the cassette was worthless because it was not opaque -- even though it was black and looked impervious to light. He mailed it to me.

The cassette looked well made and was very sturdy. But, sure enough, when I had a penlight on one side I could clearly see light leaking through the tops and bottoms of the chambers.

I mentioned this to FFP, but they never responded.

If you have not used your cassette yet, I'd advise you to load and unload the camera in the dark.

If, at some point, you would run a simple test, I would appreciate it. Just hold one of the caps over a flash light and see if light passes through -- and let us know. I would like to think that FFP has discovered the problem and resolved it. Getting the walls of these cassettes thick enough in a 3D printer and opaque enough is apparently no easy task.

In the case of Canon EF-mount, the camera bodies can be had cheaply, but the lenses, less so.

Not crazy about older screw-drive AF tech, except for the ease of adapting the lenses to other systems.I was afraid of that. Have you used it yet? Any problems?

I've printed Mamiya-16 cassettes using Proto Pasta Opaque Black HTPLA, which seems to be decently opaque.

It makes you a person with a manual focus film camera. Photography is not about what kind of camera you have; it is about what you do with it.

I'll chime in. Yes, FPP has new 3D printed cartridges. They work pretty well however there are a couple of things...

First off, there's no light seal felt so I'd recommend loading and unloading the cartridge from the camera in a dark bag.

Secondly, the caps like to stay in the camera (at least on my two) when unloading the cartridge from the camera. Another reason to use a dark bag.

Thirdly, I had an issue with my Minolta MG-S where the rotary latch to open and close the camera got hung up on the cartridge and I had a difficult time getting the camera open. Once I got it out I filed down the cartridge a bit. I don't necessarily put this on FPP or the cartridge though, it could also have been something I did.

Fourthly (?) they're kind of 'tight' when they're new, so I worked the parts that are supposed to slide against each other to wear them in a bit for smoother operation before loading any film.

It's nice to have essentially 'new' cartridges available.

I had forgotten about the lack of felt. In my mind that makes them pretty useless -- unless, as you say, load and unload in the dark. Who cares if the tops and bottoms leak light if there's no felt anyway?

It's better than nothing I suppose. I'm glad I have a stash of REAL ones.

I always seal my Minolta 16 cassette caps with small strips of 3M black paper "masking tape" -- 1/4" wide. I've never had any trouble getting the taped cassettes in or out of any Minolta camera, but with the FFP cassettes this approach may or may not work.

It leaks a little worst than just at the ends of the film in my experience. It seems to bleed across the edge of the whole roll of film.

I did finally get a real cartridge and I agree that they they are better, but the FPP cartridges are certainly usable with care and better than nothing.

I think the FPP cassettes are just slightly larger than the actual Minolta cassettes. I'm not sure there would be room for even paper tape.

I see that someone else has owned one of these cars.

My very first ever car was an MG. On the second day of ownership the whole wiring harness went up in a blaze of fire and fumes.

When I went to Mazda, the owner was so schooled on British cars that she constantly asked if we had tightened down the cylinder head bolts. It took half the day to explain that the rotary engines had no heads, cylinder or otherwise.

My Bonnie vibrated so much that I carried spare light bulbs with me. Could have used candles instead since the output was basically the same.The vibes kept cracking the license plate in half until I backed it with a plastic plate.

The cops stopped me once for not having a rear brake light. I said, “I hope you stopped me to switch vehicles”. They didn’t get the humor. And the rear brake light was working just fine. You just had to get really close to see it.

For all its faults, my Bonnie was fun as heck to ride and sounded wonderful. I sure wouldn’t mind another one, although my personal Brit bike lust object is a Norton 750 Comnando. If only.

It has nothing really to do with masochism ore any other mental condition, perhaps it's something named intuition, or what's left over of it, that forces us to a certain degree of DIY. But define 'intuition'...

Also, and I am talking for myself now, the 'human' part of pure mechanics is what attracts me.
As an example: if I put a fully automatic camera, like my Fuji X-pro3, next to a fully mechanical camera, like my Hasselblad 500, then the human factor is far more present in the second one (which I do prefer).

But, perhaps, masochism, and by extension sadism, is somewhere deeply buried (anchored) in the human being, yet latend active?

Just a little intermission. I don’t want to start an argument here.

Men are still men. At least, I can say I am.

The thing is, now those men that “aren’t really men” are allowed to waive their “manhood”. They were pretending to be “men” all along, anyways.

IMNSHO, that makes the world better for all.
