After watching some videos about contemporary mechanical watch production [and the fact that the watch makers are thriving ] I wish more people would buy those collector cameras. Personally I'd rather have the collector camera than a fine watch.

They're on the downhill again now. The people who bought the products using excess money from Pandemic are now having other interests.
I am also wondering why cameras don't have jewels, if we do maybe we won't need CLA 😜

Rangefinders and periscopes are mutually exclusive. wink..

IIRC, the periscopes on submarines actually have rangefinders built in to them

...actually...if you look closely at the escapement of this mechanical Yashica that takes Minox film...

Mechanical watch industry has a similar setback to the film camera industry when quartrz and digital watches came on the scene. Somehow the mechanical watch companies recovered, wherease the film camera companies all gave up on the mechanical cameras.

Personally, I can't wear a watch at work, so I have not warn one since I had a Swatch in the 1980s. But I do think they [mechanical watches] are cool.

I'm interested in other's opinions, but I though the mechanical watch makers appeal to, and survive because of:
1) People that want to show off wealth
2)People who want to obtaining a watch as a hedge to inflation (investment)
3) People that just like cool mechanical things

That would be me. I've actually built a couple mechanical watches from parts (movement, dial, hands, case, crystal). Setting hands is tedious, but doable with 6x magnification reading glasses. Both of my watches are based on the Seiko NH34 movement in a 36mm case (I like smaller watches). One is a daily wear watch based loosely on a Sinn 556 field watch. The other is a little dressier and only comes out when I need something a little "prettier".

Aliexpress has tons of watch parts and there's a DIY watchmakers community as their consumer. I am currently browsing around but most of the cases are 40mm. I can't stand a "wall clock on the wrist trend", the trend has been going on forever. I am a practical person so I would not need more than 1 automatic watch.

Imagine if we can just buy assemblies for our DIY Leica M3 or Canon FTb. That will be cool.

I only recently became aware of the market for watch parts at Aliexpress. I got my parts from boutique providers when I was building mine. Actually, one of my watches started out as a Seiko 5 field watch, but I didn't care for the dial or strap. Next thing I knew, I had replaced everything but the movement and case. Then, I decided I *must* have a hand-winding and hacking movement, so here came the NH34 movement. :D

I generally prefer smaller watches because my wrists aren't large and anything above 40mm tends to wear too large on my wrists. But, as I get older, I appreciate the larger dial for visibility's sake (though, a larger watch doesn't always mean a larger dial). My main daily driver is one I built and fairly small, but with an uncluttered dial sporting large numerals at 12, 3, 6, and 9, so it's pretty legible. My other DD is a factory Citizen Eco-Drive field watch that I haven't yet been compelled to "mod"...yet.

I don't need more than one watch, but I have 3. I don't need more than one camera, but I have 5. GAS is a thing for many hobbies. :D

I think a DIY Leica or Canon or Nikon would be awesome. I'd probably be down for that. Hell, with all the parts cameras out there you could probably do that already.

I had one Timex with rotating bezel when I was in college. I didn't know the case wasn't metal until I finished abusing it. The coating worn out to reveal plastic underneath, the bezel and indiglo also stopped working. Now I just need to have another Timex, that indiglo is iconic. Unfortunately the deep reef series is just too large for me.

That would be cool. There were graticules visible thru the scope. Those lines. And a stadimeter built onto the bottom of the scope. You could calculate range with a known masthead height of the ship you were looking at. But all that was a long time ago…. I‘d call this two divisions in high power.

Slowly progressing to the uselessness of Rolex 😜

I would suggest the Rolex and the Leica are equally useful if you actually use them. A lot of folks would be too afraid to use that camera, and too afraid to put on their watch too. It’s pretty silly.

I think that camera is beautiful and I’ve always wanted to try one of those speedy winders. But it’s all way outside of my comfort zone pricewise.

Ironically A Lange & Sohne in WW 2 used to make marine chronometers for the nazi navy, a friend or mine has one that his uncle captured from a u boat.
