The site deserves donations, as it's a struggle to keep going.

Absolutely! Worse, they got hacked last month - staff gave hundreds of hours getting it back on track. I can usually only give $5 - $10 each time I'm asked, but as someone who bought a car by setting aside every $5 note given in change, it adds up! For photographers in particular, Butkus and archive.org deserve our gratitude for preserving all of this knowledge and making it accessible to the world. A dollar or three every now and then to either/both is a very worthy investment.
No affiliation, merely a deep appreciation for the preservation and sharing of knowledge.
Did I mention that Photrio has a donation facility if you're unable to commit to a subscription for whatever reason? 😀

Yes, Molli, I've sent donations to Mike Butkus too over the years. The Internet Archive is giving me a lot of Middle English documents at present, as I have an interest that way (better add Wikipedia to the list as well!).

Wow, that is definitely a treasure trove. Thank you @Andreas Thaler for sharing! With cameras getting old and factory trained technician becoming fewer, open source plus new breed of technicians seem to be the only way to enjoy these cameras for the foreseeable future.

There is a lot of useful information (now free) at Rick Oleson’s site: http://rick_oleson.tripod.com/index-27.html. Highly recommended.

As rich as this source is, unfortunately the service manuals are only of limited help when you are trying to repair something. They are not repair instructions.

Tutorials from experienced repair people such as Gene Pate

or Garry with his excellent videos that he regularly publishes

would also be important.

But everyone who works as a DIYer also has valuable experience that should be published and preserved.

So I'm getting on your nerves again with this topic 😌

Or shorter posts, the main thing is that the knowledge is passed on 🙂

The cited webpages are like recipes, one has the information needed to cook a dish, but one must still assemble the necessary tools and do the work. I would be nice, at least to me, if the cited webpages actually did the work for me to. 😧

Maybe we should set up a network for free repairs. Everyone helps each other.

But I'm afraid that won't be compatible with local tax and business regulations.

An idealistic idea.

Interesting idea. I had not thought of that. Any ideas how it would work?

I don't think it's feasible for the reasons mentioned.

Ideas are one thing, reasonable implementation is another. You should always keep that in mind, especially if you are an idealist 🙂

But I think DIY can be done in many different ways.

Not everyone who deals with repair topics wants to pick up a screwdriver themselves. But maybe they have theoretical skills, engineering knowledge, can search for and find errors using the available documents, etc.

DIY doesn't have to mean doing everything yourself. The exchange of knowledge is just as valuable and that is what happens here in the forum.

And if you want to have your camera repaired by a professional, these tips should be welcome. If I tell him that it can be done this way and that way, he doesn't have to find out for himself. And he might be more willing to accept the job. Even a professional can't know everything.
