Julius Shulman comes to mind immediately - he shot a lot of iconic images of modernist buildings. There is a great documentary about him that I've yet to catch.

Ezra Stoller was another one of the greats.

Can't go wrong looking to Shulman and Stoller. Working today? http://www.normanmcgrath.com/ is still active, I believe. He has a couple of how-to books that provide a good foundation for those who have the basics of photography mastered and want specialized knowledge about architectural photography.

The New York Times lens blog featured him in 2011 here: http://lens.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/06/14/when-everything-moves-but-the-subject/?_php=true&_type=blogs&_r=0

And along the Ezra Stoller line, I'm no expert, but would guess any of the folks associated with his Esto would be industry leaders today:

I think most of the well known ones still working are regional...some of the most well known in Boston are not well known in Chicago...and so forth.

Joe Aker of Houston does architectural photography.

I don't know if he is well known, though.

The Chicago photographic firm of Hedrich Blessing is very well known. See
