APUG Photo Challenge - Feb 2005 Decision Time

Okay, it's make-your-mind-up time! We have nine suggestions for the February theme. Here's your chance to vote for your favourite.

(BTW this is the first poll I've posted, so forgive me if it all goes horribly hatstand!)

Since I don't see the chance to have a nude model soon... i'll go for the Industrial abstract.

Hello all,

I'd be attracted to "industrial abstract" or "ligt can be dark", but I wonder if I could get some idea of a definition? possibly an text example or two?

I think that's the whole point - or at least part of the point. Now we don't know what to expect...

Aaahhh......that's cool! I'll vote now, and once we know what the theme is, it'll be almost as much fun seeing what the interpretation of the theme is as it will be seeing the photos.

Oldrad - Ole has it right, however there has been a discussion around the themes on (there was a url link here which no longer exists) thread. Discussion on the Challenge itself (a long one) can be found (there was a url link here which no longer exists).

I like the "Light can be Dark" idea; it means I will have to think about the subject before I can photograph it.

There's some tough choices here, but I've opted for "Industrial Abstract" there again the "Light can be Dark" is very very close. Had to flip a coin to decide between the 2.

Last call for votes on the preferred theme for the Feb 2005 Challenge. Poll closes tomorrow.

And the winner is... ..."Light Can Be Dark", a collaborative suggestion from Les McLean and Andrew Moodie (conclusively proving that they are both sadists and should never be allowed to collaborate again! ) Seeing everyone's different takes on this one should be very interesting!

Closing date for the Feb Challenge is Mar 10, entries to be posted at any time up to then in the Challenge Gallery.

...and don't forget the January Challenge currently running, themed "a self-portrait which says something about where you live". Closing date for that one is Feb 10.

Around this time next month I'll start up a suggestions thread for the March Challenge (unless someone beats me to it!) and we can go round the loop (or the bend!) again. If anyone has any suggestions to improve this method then feel free to post them here or on the original Challenge thread or (if you're shy and bashful) then feel free to PM me.

I have no clue what this theme means. Maybe it is the mushy nature of my brain but I don't get it.

There are too many threads concerning this. How about one thread not two or three. Just one.

The more recent threads were created because the original thread was so long that no one (especially the newbies) could be bothered wading through it. From feedback I've received, some people like this approach while others find it fragmented and confusing...

I guess you can't please all of the people all of the time.

Okay. Here's a brief rundown of the APUG Challenge situation as of 26 Jan 2005. I'm cross-posting this in all related threads in an attempt to clear up the apparent confusion.

The original (there was a url link here which no longer exists) was getting too long for easy browsing, so (by request) I set up a specific thread for the (there was a url link here which no longer exists). This was well received, but the timescale was felt to be too short for some people to put something together and the theme was presented more or less as a fait accompli.

To address these problems I started a (there was a url link here which no longer exists) and, once a goodly number of suggestions had been received, a (there was a url link here which no longer exists) so that people could choose what they wanted to do. (I would have combined these two, but I don't think you can turn an existing thread into a poll...).

The situation now is:

January Challenge
Theme - "A self-portrait which says something about where you live"
Closing date - 10 Feb

February Challenge
Theme - "Light can be dark"
Closing date - 10 Mar

All submissions should be posted in the (there was a url link here which no longer exists) by the appropriate closing date.

I propose creating a new March Suggestions thread followed by a March poll in a couple of weeks time (unless I lose the will to live in the meantime!). If anyone has any better ideas for how to organise the Challenge then please either PM me or post the suggestions in the original (there was a url link here which no longer exists). If people would rather someone else organised it, that's fine with me too.

You missed the point, I meant only one thread per month. There was the other thread where the discussion started about february then this thread. I can't imagine the difficulty in doing one thread for february, then another thread for march and so on. Why a discussion and then a seperate thread all together for a vote?

Mark that's the challenge of this one. As technically everything we see and shoot is light and the lack of it, this one is almost limitless. The difficult part is trying to capture something different to do with light or a variations of lack of it. I've still not been able to nail down what or how to shoot yet but there's still time

Rather have someone take a unilateral decision on which of the nine suggestions was selected, or a sort-of consent from some/most people reading a thread over a couple of days, I decided that a poll would be clearer and fairer. This meant having two threads, one to propose the suggestions and one to vote.

Personally, I think it worked out quite well (but we'll probably have to agree to disagree on that). I don't think having these two threads is too confusing and I propose doing the same thing next month (although I will post a msg in the suggestions thread when the poll opens and closes and I might ask Sean to lock the poll thread once the poll closes) unless I get a lot of objections and/or someone suggests a much better approach.

I suppose I could start a thread to poll on whether we should have a poll, but...!

I think the ambiguity is what attracted a lot of people (including me) to the theme. It will be interesting to see people's different interpretations.

Hey Poobah Frank I think you are doing a great job too. I'm not a very experienced photographer, but have put an image in. The moon is so bright you have to make it dark to actually be able to see it. In my mind it fits the theme, but it might just be my way of thinking. Sorry about the quality, it's my first serious attempt at a lunar photo.
