Don't forget Steve Sherman and his "Awesome Technique of Semi-Stand Development" workshop from Aug. 27 to Sep. 1. I tend to roll my eyes when I hear the word 'Awesome', but I can attest from personal experience with Steve's process that it is, and so is he. (not to mention his prints)

The workshop he gave for us in Rockville this past weekend has sent all of the participants off in many new directions. And here I thought my processes were set for life. Silly me.

Sorry I forgot Steve. In fact his class sounds more like my style of development that I seek. I might have to trot back to Montana in August to take his class. In fact Most the class at Photographers formulary (I exclude the digital for personal reasons) I want to take. They have a class operation and are located in a spectacular setting. Lynn and Budd are great people. We are most fortunate to have them as sponsors of apug.

If you do make it back, Aggie, I can promise you won't be disappointed. Steve said that unlike the one he did for us, the PF workshop will have a heavy emphasis on shooting the negatives in the field. I had the good fortune to be out with him shooting the day before our workshop and he gave me a lot of tips I would've missed had he not been there.

I certainly hope that some of you will take advantage of one or more of the Formulary workshops. The facilities are truly outstanding, and as Aggie mentioned, Bud and Lynn, who own and operate the Formulary, are really great people, plus the setting, surrounded by high mountains on all sides, is close to idyllic. And the opportunity to spend a week in this unique and beautiful setting interacting with highly motivated persons interested in advancing the craft is truly unique.

I know for a fact, I am really looking forward to meeting many of you when your out this way!

The Mountains an such amaze me every single day and when ever someone comes out to Bud's place, I can guarantee you, that you will have a fantastic time, and that don't include the learning experiance your going to get..

Just an add on incentive....

Today I shot my first ISO 200 paper negative with ortho sensitivity. I'm still working on extensions to add to the class to make it an outstanding learning experience for all who attend.

BTW, the same thing on film support was about ISO 25 - 50. It still has faults such as high fog and low contrast, but I am moving forward and will pass this and more on to the attendees in complete detail.

For those interested, this is an SRAD (Single Run Ammonia Digest) AgBrI, with optimal sulfur sensitization (no gold yet) and with a spectral sensitizing dye. The emulsion was precipitated in Phthalated Gelatin and ISO washed with an acid base cycle. It takes about 3 days to make properly and has 2 digest steps, each about 1 - 2 hours long.

All chemicals to make this and the other emulsions will be available to students at the workshop and I have hopes that the Formulary will be able to stock and sell the dyes, dopants and antifoggants. This includes rhodium and iridium salts among a host of others. Twenty coating blades are on order (10 each in 2 sizes) to be available at the workshop. This is rev 3 of the blades. The redesign was done to facilitate coating on film and baryta support among other revisions. I also have the first sample of a film coating blade which will be available at the workshop. It may not be ready in quantity by then.

I would also like to add that I zipped out to the Formulary in July of 2005 and made the AgCl emulsion for Bud and Bill Troop. They walked with me through the entire process from making to coating to exposing and processing. It worked perfectly. I gave Bud the prints.
