Hi There Folks.

We will be required by mid Jan to submit our ad and gallery show listing to Contact Magazine. Just before the Contact Festival over 50thousand printed copies are distributed throughout the art communities and as well avaliable at all LBCO outlets in Toronto.

My gallery can handle anywhere from 40- 50 20x24 framed pieces.

Here is what I am thinking :

APUG subscribers can donate one or more images to be shown at this show, I am looking for high quality analoge prints. (between 8x10 and 16x20 ) in size.
Return postage should be sent with your submission.
All prints *accepted for the show* will be framed by Elevator Gallery *me*.

The prints submitted will be with the Artists understanding that a Silent Auction will happen during the Conference as well as Email bids through APUG site . ( all photographs will be scanned before framing to go on the auction block).

The price of framing and shipping will be deducted from the final bid on each image. then 60% will go to the artist and 40% will go to APUG.

I would like to see all end photographic processes as I think this the intent of the Conference and as your Vice President of Conference operations a bit of input this week will help me solidify the show.

Will contact prints from smaller images also be accepted?

i.e. 3x4, 4x5, 5x7, & 4x10

Do the prints need to be 100% analog? I shoot strictly film and print onto Fuji Crystal Archive, but use a digital printer to do the printing.

If the images are kick ass they can be 1inch x 1inch in a 20x24 frame. I don't think the image size is going to be too much of a drawback and if there are a lot of contact submissions I will make a dedicated area for them with appropriate size frames.

Robert , unfortunately prints off a Lambda, Chromira, Lightjet, Dlab , Epsalon, Frontier, will not be accepted. How will I know * I won't * but the push of the conference will be analoge and we hope each submitter of images will respect this.

Well, it is your gallery.

But it is disappointing that those of us who print, either by choice or necessity, using means other than a standard enlarger - and I'm not the only one - are welcome to support APUG monetarily and in other ways, but our work isn't welcome. I am coming to the conference, but I'm not supporting your gallery sales, if my work is not welcome.

You may notice that there are no color landscape images in the APUG gallery; most of the other color landscape photographers are in the same boat as I am. Printing and selling color landscapes is not the same as doing black and white - my costs are much higher, and my margins much lower.

Personally, I am not calling the shots , I am supplying the venue.
This topic of digital print device was brought up at the very beginning of the conference forum idea.
I have one of those large imaging devices on site and it will be put under wraps for the conference. I print both methods and have no problem with digital prints but it was decided from day one to only produce analogue prints for this conference and only teach analogue workshops.
I have absolutely no problem with this as I daily print on an enlarger .

David. I think if I have all the prints by March 25 , this will allow enough time for the selection and framing / installation.

Bob,

For the silent auction, does the artist set the starting price?

Thanks...

Hi Kerik

I have no problem with the Artist setting a starting point on price
in fact I think this would be helpful.
I was considering a minimum bid on all work submitted and accepted for hanging.
Realisticly I would think a UN - framed piece would start at $250 Canadian to cover framing shipping and something for the artist and APUG.
We will be inviting local art buyers to attend the opening gala *for a fee of course* along side of the APUG attendees.

We do anticipate very large crowds over this weekend to attend the print show and the trade show. Judging by our last three openings the traffic will be large and this would be a good way for APUGers to get their work out there. ( I know the organizing committe - marketing- is hoping to have a lot of press and hopefully coverage of this event.)

The address is:

We will have a seperate gallery for the Workshop Instructors and those who are giving tours, demonstrations etc...

You are still welcome to be in both.

Is this open to all APUG subscribers? Or only the ones that can attend?

Thanks!

Greetings!
Do you have any suggestions for safely mailing mounted and matted prints to the gallery show? Is there some kind of special packaging that I should buy? Thanks for any help!

I'm curious as to what efforts have been put in to general/local marketing to attract attendance (non-apugers) to this. Anyone have that info?
If that info is posted in one of the numerous conference threads - my apologies.
Thanks, Matt

Here is what I am considering for the Gallery Show.

First off , do not matt the prints, If you mount give me some space around the Image to work with.

I am going to select the work with a few other Local Photographers to hang in the Show. I am looking for examples of all alternative and silver prints as well as colour imagery produced in a Traditional time tested manner. Variety and Quality is important as it samples the APUG community

There was a thread that Mr Callow started that listed the various methods.
that were considered Analogue print.

The show will be from Thurs to Sun during the course of the Conference and depending upon entrys and quality it will be inside and in the Tent City for viewing.
We expect a large turnout for this component of the Conference.
We will be listing the show in the Contact Festival Magazine as well as the Workshops and Trade Show.
Print quality must me excellent and Imagery Outstanding.
A minimum bid must be submitted for all work.
I suggest a starting point of $200 Canadian
Simple framing costs will be taken out and then a 60/40 split will be used for online bidding and silent bidding at the show.(60 to photographer 40 to APUG)
All Images that are accepted will be scanned and put up on the APUG Conference site for bidding .
** To get your prints back sufficient funds must be sent for this purpose. We promise to protect your work as well as we can*

I will need these prints in Toronto by the first week of April, I will not consider any prints after April 7th 2006

ps the above is not completely written in stone, I am open to any good suggestions but for now this is it

Hi Matt

To answer your question regarding local marketing, we have basically held off. We are trying to get as many APUGers here first and formost.
The GTA has a tremendous photo community and if announced too soon all workshops would be booked with Local non APUGers.
We are confident that this will be a full event.

But ::: we are very close to open up the conference locally so if you are sitting on the fence waiting DON'T , your spot may soon go.

Bob,

If we send images and they are not chosen to be hung, can we just pick them up during the conference so no one has to deal with mailing them again?

Actually right now , I require a ton of alternative prints for consideration, we have some nice submissions of traditional silver(thanks patrica and tim) I would appreciate the prints sooner than later and a starting bid price.( full descriptions of the process would also be helpful)
