how about a print scan first to see what passes muster as images that need to proceed to be looked at in person? Otherwise, there could be tons of valuable prints sat around potentially being damaged, mishandled, and how do the unsuccessful ones get returned? Seems like a lot of logistics need to be figured out.

I have created a main project page and a dedicated submissions gallery. If this looks ok to you guys I will start promoting it in other areas. Thanks!

(there was a url link here which no longer exists)

Sean-

I clicked on the link to the APUG book project gallery and I get an error message that I don't have sufficient permissions to see the gallery. Is it a bad link, or is the gallery not yet ready to receive submissions?

Was still tweaking, should be ok now

I don't know that it's a matter of who is capable of creating great images - there are plenty of non-members who still shoot analog and make great images, but we're not considering them. Just my humble opinion but it should be limited to subscribers because they are the ones who have consistently from year to year contributed to the upkeep and support of this site.

If I saw 500 Subscribers that were willing to spend $50.00
on The APUG Photo Book, maybe I would accept that reason.
I was considering the possibility of " A 15 year old Member from
Brooklyn, that thinks her photograph would be worthy of the APUG Book "

It's A Global Community, We Need To Realize That Some Members
Cannot Afford To Become Subscribers, Maybe It's A Challenge Just
To Get Occasional Access To APUG And Learn A Little About Photography.

Logic clearly dictates that the needs of the many, outweigh the needs of the few

there are plenty of members who spend a boatload of $$ on cameras and film and paper and ...
use everything site has to offer including the classifieds, but unfortunately can't afford 24$ for a year subscription
or 12$ for a 6month subscription ? while i think it would be a great thing to include members in the book
but ... maybe having it "subscribers only " will somehow have people change their minds and support the site
more than they already do ...

My thoughts mirrors Ian's and John's.

But, in the end, I am not sure if it will matter that much. This site is already very inclusive. Perhaps subscriber should get "SUBSCRIBER" under their name and member like wise. Support for this book is already limited and became so contentious. Including more people may improve its prospect of becoming a successful project.

There is an argument to be made that something like this SHOULD be somewhat exclusive - otherwise, to a lot of people, what's the incentive to participate? You know, that whole Groucho Marx "I wouldn't want to belong to any club that would have me as a member" thing. There would also be nothing to stop a drive-by joiner from posting a few comments to the threads, creating some gallery postings, and submitting work to the book. That would be terribly unfair to those who have been long-term participants and contributors, and not representative of the APUG community. If you must allow members and not subscribers, allow members to submit, but subscribers get priority in the book. If there are not enough subscribers juried in, then allow members to be considered for the remaining slots. I don't think putting labels like "subscriber" or "member" would be that meaningful, especially to the world at large that would see the book. I would put a bit in the bio for each photographer how LONG they've been an APUG member - "joined 2002" etc.

I'm beginning to think, someone like Sean and the moderators will need to make an executive decision and go with it, or else it will never happen.

A thread after a thread, we have been discussing this and opinions, philosophies, and percieved (because it hasn't happened yet) realities are so wide, I don't see consensus coming our way.

It won't happen until some collective decisions are made.

The basic parameters are identical regardless of whether it'll be a Fine art litho book or POD, the influencing factor is numbers. So decisions need to be made on that basis.

These decisions need to be agreed by consensus, it's no good Sean & the moderators imposing criteria because they aren't putting the project together or doing the work. Sean has made suggestions and that's the POD route.

MAS has not come back with any figures/costings, but he may . . . . . . .
