APUG book project

This thread is to determine how many entries and what categories we will have in the APUG book.

There are probably more items I will need to know but this is to get the ball rolling and determine what is going to be involved. I can guess that if the numbers are to large there will be limitations. I would like to keep this thread as "information only"
and keep discussion down to a minimum. If there are any of you out there that has expertise with this please PM me.

Each has it's own quirks when it comes to being reproduced in either a magazine or a book and the printer will most likely need to know this. It is also helpful in case we need to break this down into by categories. Keep em coming, let's see how big this is going to be. I would like to know if we will have to do a one off book or a series.

Wouldn't "medium" or something similar be more appropriate than "format" then?

I agree. Wouldn't this information be more useful for the final, chosen photographs? How many submissions are people going to be allowed to make? What if each submission is in a different printing medium?

Also, not everyone wants their proper name posted on the internet (for various legitimate reasons) so I find it a little off-putting to have to post my full name for what is basically a survey.

Your probably right, I may be jumping the gun a bit but I am trying to see how much interest there is in this project. If anyone has a problem putting their name on this now it is optional. At this point I have no idea how many entries one person can have, it all depends on space and howany we can get involved. At some point in time I will have to have X number of firm commitments for purchase and I figure about 20% of initial interested parties to be about what others sites have experienced.*

I have contacted several publishers with a slew of questions and now it is just a matter of hearing back with the answers. Most publishers tho will want to keep the profits off of the sales and I have no problem with that. The problem lies with the viability, how many firm commitments do we have? That is the question they will*want an answer to before they will even look at this. My goal is to make this an objet d'art in and of it's self, something you could set on your coffee table and be proud of and to that end I am searching out regular publishing houses instead of some Internet site.

I would see how much interest there is, how many participants. I could see over 150 participants and I would think one photograph each would be a good place to be. I would hope there would be more.

Will APUG also bear the burden of a loss if no profits are made?

I don't know the answer for this, as I would assume that the aim of such a project financially would be to break even. If there was a profit, maybe some form of charity (but then there is always arguements on which one...)

i agree with you ... and that is why i think POD might be
the way to go, very low costs compared to a high end printing company
and the expense of storage.

Just for the record I have no interest in profit from this so don't let that hold anything back. If a book of beautiful quality is produced and represents the APUG community in a positive way, then that is all the reward I would hope for. This is no easy task so whoever pulls this off should be compensated for their work.

I don't want anyone to think that profit is my motivation for this either. The impetus for this was the fact that I see so much beautiful work by so many artist that I would like to own and I felt others might feel the same way.

- POD or shell out money for a print run?
- who gets money for what and why?

This list is encouraging but I have been informed we don't need all this info just who is willing to send me their best print or scan.

Just to let you know, I will take them and log them in so that only I will know who's is who's. I'll number the prints and send them onto Michael who will evaluate them and determine which ones would go into the book. The greater the number of entries the lower the cost to the artist who are picked because those numbers will also determine how big the book will be.

Cost has always been a factor. If the cost is to high we will work on ways to bring it down without sacrificing quality that is were having more folks involved will be beneficial. If after everything thar can be done has been done and the cost is still to high then we can start looking to less expensive avenues but until then let's exhaust all options with this plan first.

My goal from the beginning has been to create a book that is as much art as the art that fills it and Sean has given Michael high praise by directing me to Lodima press for this project.
