Apo-Nikkor 480 - How to remove from old mount

I just acquired a 480mm Apo-Nikkor barrel lens that came attached to the lensboard assembly for the process camera.

Can anyone offer any advice about removing the lens from the old mount? Otherwise, I'll take it to a shop to have it done. Thanks.

The entire lens should just unscrew from the base. You should then be able to see how the mounting ring is attached to the lensboard. The one on mine was held in place by six machine screws (normal phillips head). A couple were stuck but loosened up with a little force. And that is it.

Say Paul says, a good counter-clockwise twist of the lens should remove it from the flange.

Thanks for the advice. I clamped it down and it budged on the third good try. The six screws came out easily. Now I just need to get the lens apart to clean the elements. Is that something you've done also?

When I asked the late Steve Grimes to disassemble a 305mm Apo Nikor to clean dust from between the elements he wouldn't do it. Apparently a significant portion of those lenses' superior performance derived from extra-precise factory assembly that Steve didn't think he could duplicate upon reasembly. It would likely be better to leave well enough alone.

480mm Nikkor Process Lens

If you get the idea to take the actual lens apart to install the cells in a shutter, don't try to take it apart yourself. This is the voice of experience.
Bright side, they are relatively inexpensive now and produce wonderful shots.

This is one of my favorite shots with this lens.
