I was thinking of doing a "walkabout" in DTLA Sunday morning. That's this Sunday February 8. Around 8am? Anyone else interested?

I hate to bring this up (not really) but Louisiana is a little big for a walkabout on a Sunday. You are talking about Louisiana (abr. LA) aren't you? Of course if you meant Los Angeles, it might be better to use L.A. I am not being picky about this. I have had both UPS and the Post Office bring packages and mail that went to Los Angeles before coming back across the country to Louisiana. And, of course, I do expect remarks to be made about this complaint.........Regards!

I would be interested, gotta get some photo for the post card exchange and the neg exchange. Are you using a big camera,med camera or small camera. The mornings are best for me holding on to a cup of coffee. I have done a lot of walks alone the L.A. river and the older commercial area, pretty quiet there on Sunday mornings.

I used to teach a class in "Photographing Ethnic Los Angeles" and we went to Little Tokyo (three "hidden" Japanese gardens), Chinatown and North Broadway which one of my students said looked like Guatamala with women carrying groceries home on the top of their heads like they do down there. There are great old buildings (Bradbury Building), fabulous olde movie palaces, all kinds of photogenic stuff. The tall wooden old time village fire watch tower in Little Tokyo (First Street) is a great place to meet. Watch the parking lots. Some are expensive but if you look around you can find cheaper ones. I'd love to make it but am under the weather.

OK LA peeps. If you're coming, 8am Grand Central Market Hill St entrance. Look for the yellow Hassey in my hands. I figure we'll go down Broadway, detour into the Clothing Market / Flower Market, up Spring, do the Toy Market. Call it day with some grub nearby.

Being this is the California forum even a UPS driver might have understood it did not mean Louisiana!

Hello Los Angelino Ape Huggers,

MikeC and I had a great walkabout this morning. Mike came all the way from Norwalk after a late night shift to trek with me in the Historic Core of Downtown LA. He brought along his Bessa III and Roleiflex. He was shooting Tri-X and T-Max. if I recall correctly. I had My Precious yellow Hasselblad 503CW and shot Ektachrome 100.

We started the day at G&B Coffee in Grand Central Market. Made our way down Broadway and snapped pics of several of the renovated theaters: Million Dollar, Palace, Rialto, Orpheum, Los Angeles were the ones I recall. The doorman at the ACE Hotel let me snap a few at the threshold. We wondered at the late Hearst's shuttered Herald Examiner headquarters with its Moorish inspired architecture. Juice break at Verve Cafe. Wandered on the perimeter of Skid Row. Strolled through a very small farmer's market on 5th St. Peeked in the Last Bookstore. Walked through the Spring Arcade Mall. Strolled past Pershing Square. Marveled at the staircases in the Bradbury Building. Ate lunch at Berlin Currywurst back in Grand Central Market. We didn't get a chance to venture into the Toy District, Flower Exchange , or Clothing Market since it was too early on Sunday and nothing there was open - most vendors being Latin/Catholic. Another day.

I had a pleasant chat with Miklos Boros. A commercial photographer from Austria. He was visiting LA - having drove here from Miami! We chatted about his work and his several projects underway. His website is: http://www.miklosboros.com/blog/
Next was a very animated John Free. Self described social anthropologist / street photographer / retired professor at UCLA. He happened to be running his DTLA Photo Challenge this weekend and had a LOT TO SAY. Great guy. Very Friendly. Well known. More on his work and his Challenge: http://www.johnfreephotography.com
Cliff Gagliardo from the Leica Gallery noticed my yellow Hassey and invited us to the gallery after a brief chat over coffee. http://www.leicagalleryla.com
Nancy was one of John's students. She was passing by as I was taking a snap near the farmer's market. She has an APUG account and hopefully, we'll see her at our next outing.
Elisabeth also noticed my yellow Hassey in the Bradbury building. She has a Mamiya 645 and hopefully she too will come venture with us later. I don't think her guy was impressed I was spending 20 minutes chatting with her.

It was a good day and there was great light. I'll post another outing for next month. Maybe we'll make this monthly?

Love to make the next GTG if you guys have another in L.A. Even though I'm from San Diego, I wouldn't mind the drive, the last time I went for get-together in LA was when "the art of photography" Ted Forbes had a meet up there.

Anyone want to get together in LA?
