It seems there was a period (early 1990's maybe) when Kodak was introducing a ton of color film products. One that I vaguely remember was an Ektachrome called "Lumiere". Does anyone remember this, and more importantly what were its characteristics and are there current Ektachromes that are similar?

I don't remember that it was a particularly great transparency film. Grainy and warm is my recollection.

It crossprocessed really well. The lPP (I think that was the code) was slightly better than the lPX (warm). About 5 years ago I bought all I could find on ebay and shot my last roll a couple years ago. I think that the freashest roll I had expired in 98.

Galen Rowell was promoting this at some talks I saw in the early 90's. They did have a regular and "warm" version. I took some to Africa--the warm was not a good match.

I used a fair amount of it. The earliest stuff I got was produced in France by Koadak Pathe (my earliest use was 1988 - 1989 I think), and later it was produced in the US. It preceeded EPP, and it was generally a lot like EPP. But compared to EPP it had some problems - a quite narrow latitude and some color crossover that could tint highlights and shadows in some cases. Grain was a bit greater than EPP. Generally though, its faults were minor and not usually noticed.

It was supposed to be Kodak's answer to the Japanese invasion spelled Velvia. IMHO it sucked compared to Velvia. In a lot of other people's opinion also it seems as they left it in the just-as-well-forgotten file.

Hmm, I seem to recall EPP coming Before Lumiere. Used a fair bit of it too. I remember thinking that it didn't look right. Kind of like a saturated pastel-y, and grainy too. I also recall that it didn't reproduce well.
I had a publisher that Hit The Fan when he found out I used Fuji (RDP I think) for the cover shots. He was from the era when Kodak could do no wrong, and this was when Fuji was busting out with Velvia and RDP, superior pro products that matched the palette of the times (stronger contrast, enhanced saturation etc) and insisted that I use Kodak Product the next cover shot. So I shot Lumiere, and while the 6x6 chromes *looked* interesting on the light table alone, side by side with RDP they didn't look *right*. The publication still ran the Lumiere frames, and I had to laugh, by the time they went thru color separation (pre-photoshop) and the ink hit the press, the results in print looked even worse. I went back to RDP and nothing else was said. I'll see if I can dredge up a frame to scan, should be interesting.
