There is no special mask-layer. The mask is integral part of the basic 3-layer set-up, in which couplers of two layers are coloured themselves.

Cool. I had found a text explaining that right after I posted here. I can’t find it right now, it it’s basically the same as you said and is a lot longer, so I prefer your explanation.
