For those worried about taking their cameras, their concern is probably justified, but the danger likely wouldn't come from those attending the rally... it would come from the violent mob protesting outside the rally. If someone is inclined to destroy a police car (as they've done in So. Cal), they surely wouldn't hesitate to liberate your camera from you.

Although I have zero admiration for the star of the farcical show, it should be apparent that a certain element has mixed into the protests who can be classified as recreational anarchists. They were particularly active around here for awhile, almost nightly, finding endless excuses to start riots, trash buildings, loot, etc. The same individuals have been spotted at other volatile setting across the country. And they obviously don't like being personally photographed or identified. A couple of wannabee photojournalists have come close to having their heads bashed in, and did get their
cameras smashed along with bruises. And some of these characters are high and especially unpredictable. Then there's always the risk of getting
caught in a melee between them and police. So be careful.

Recreational anarchists...............that's fookin' great!
As humorous as that may, or may not be.....I want to give a 100% honest Thank You...!!
I have often wondered the correct spelling of "melee".
It is a great word, but my crappy spell-check could never figure out what I was trying to spell.
So...once again.....Thank You

I remember the riots during the early 70's when as a student I was moving into an apartment here in the People's Republic of Berserky. My little Toyota was dented in three places by rubber shotgun slugs, the car dealership on the corner was burned to the ground, every window on the main
street was broken up to the third story, as I watched a mob of several thousand people pass below, and people did die. Rude introduction for a naive
country kid who was accustomed to seeing ground squirrels tussle instead. Don't think we'll see those kind of riots again in this country unless a
particular individual does get elected. But a few old motheaten now-gentrified hippies from that era have teamed up with spoiled rich kids looking
for a cause, and then along come the looters and vandals with their own priorities in a revolution. They can't get away with it here anymore, so they
moved next door to downtown Oakland, at least till they more than wore out their welcome there, destroying downtown businesses night after night.
All the sincere protesters of whatever stripe said goodbye to that wacko mob long ago. But like I said, they travel anywhere they sense opportunity to inflame a situation. The the star of the current circus seems to deliberately egg on this kind of thing for the free publicity. I don't want to wander too far off track into the political implications of all this, so I'll just summarize by saying that I've seen with my own eyes what can happen when things go terribly wrong - and I wouldn't want to be in the street with a camera when it does! There's the potential for either side to regard you as a red
flag being waved to a bull. I've seen several riots with blood spattered, heads bashed in, molotov cocktails thrown, live bombs go off, gunshots,
baseball bats swinging. And you're Smartphone navigation device won't give you a clue how to get out of a mess like that if you're caught in it.

Don't think we'll see that again? Baltimore?????April/May 2015??

Ferguson???August 2014??? Where have you been hiding?

Not to mention living in Baltimore in April 1968. Dad was a Baltimore City Police officer. My house looked like a squad room 24 hours a day for weeks. Cops drinkin' coffee eatin' donuts sleeping on the couch at all hours.

Ferfuson was a small event compared to what I've seen in the past. Don't want to take sides, but yeah, some of our local riffraff went to Ferguson too, trying to capitalize on those circumstances for the sake of recreational looting etc. It was different in the 60's and 70's because the unrest was nearly nationwide and understandable entrenched due to a very unpopular war. The difference was, the "outside agitators" were often FBI plants.
J.Edgar didn't play by the rules and had political motives for throwing gasoline on the embers. Unless you were local it would be hard to believe how
twisted and things got. But at least a couple of doomesday cults got intercepted who were more heavily armed than any recent group. One of them
had an entire warehouse filled with heavy artillery just two blocks from my condo. Pretty quiet now by comparison, despite the millions of dollars of damage to the city next door. How big was the Baltimore event compared to the Watts riots? My sister was a social worker there when it broke out,
so we were quite concerned. She got out fine, then switched her career to landscaping!
