I will be on the South Island from 7 October through 15 October. While I will be spending most of my time photographing in the Otago region, I would be willing to meet for a beer and photography discussion with anyone who wants to get together. Just PM me.

From my observations, there's not many, if any of us from the south island, which is odd, seeing as (in my opinion anyway), it's got the most beautiful scenery the country has to offer. Although there may be a lurker or two who I've missed who lives down there. I'm also entertaining the idea of a move to Christchurch, but it won't be until next year, unfortunatly.

I have been in contact with an APUG member from Dunedin, who has given me a lot of ideas and suggestions. I'm hoping to meet up with him while there. You are right, the South Island is one of the most beautiful places on earth. Most of the photographers from there that I know shoot mainly 6x17 - I'm going to visit Gilbert van Reenen a photographer from Wanaka that I bought a book from earlier this year.

What are of New Zealand do you live in? I've spent some time in the Otago and Milford Sound regions on my last trip, as well as a couple of days in Christchurch. Christchurch is quite a beautiful town, I could easily see myself living there.

Robert, I live in Wellington, and will unlikely be in the South Island or Otago while you are there. My suggestions, based on what I understand are the sort of photos you take, are the Catlins, a coastal area south of Dunedin, the road from Balclutha to Alexandra and the McKenzie Country.

The Museum in Dunedin, in the main 'square' (called the Octagin) is worth a visit.

David, thanks for the tips. There is a large waterfall in the Catlins that I have heard about. I'm not planning on spending too much time along the coast, since that is pretty much like where I live now. I grew up next to the mountains in Colorado, so I was thinking about spending time where I could see them, and still be near a body of water - like Lake Wakatipu, Lake Wanaka, Lake Hawea, perhaps somewhere along the Waimakariri River as well. I'm going to try not to drive too much though, so I don't where I will actually visit. I've actually driven the route from Balclutha to Alexandra (I have a close friend who works for the Central Otago District Council).

I am also planning on spending about a week on the North Island as well; I think that Sean and John McCallum are planning on a get together somewhere around Auckland during that time. If that is too far for you to go, I could come down closer to Wellington during my trip if you would like to get together. I don't have any plans for my time in the North Island yet, other than spending my last day in Auckland.

I'm from Wellington also. I've seen your photos from the last time you were down there, and I'm sure you'll find locations to take equally as great photos anywhere in the south island. If you're going to be based so far south, the Moeraki Boulders to me seem like they'd suit your style pretty well, and would be about an hours drive north of Dunedin. From the photos I've seen of them, they look pretty spectacular.
