Anyone going to Review LA or Photo LA ?

I'm sure that this will sound a bit cynical, but why should I pay someone to tell me that my works sucks?

Seriously, I question the value of these reviews unless one is really inexperienced or shifting around for recognition and net working.

I'm not really knocking the process or the experience but realistically what should ones expectations be from a review like this?

Studio 391 will be there and should have some of my wet plate work on hand... I'm toying with the idea of making the trip south, but I don't think my schedule will allow it.

All I can say is to do your homework. Study the career of those you hope to review with to see what it is in their history that makes them at all qualified to review, guide or influence your work in any way. I have no personal experience with these whatsoever, but I have firsthand knowledge of people being savaged at these things by "reviewers" I wouldn't think qualified to do so in the least. However, I also have knowledge of good coming from these type of events and that they can be very good for networking. Just another case of buyer beware. If you see names on these lists of reviewers that you have great respect for, go for it. If not, save your money. It is my opinion that you can get very good advice for free if you look to the right people or galleries and I would be very wary of anyone charging you for such a service.

At the recent Brits and Yanks workshop we had our images critiqued by Les McLean, Sandy King, Bill Schwab and Joe Cornish. What I found interesting was that the majority of the advice offered, centered around compositional rather than aesthetic quality. I know that I benefitted immensely from the advice that was given.

My advice, for whatever that is worth, would be to go with a goal in mind. Meaning, if you want to be shown in galleries, then choose to be reviewed by gallery people. If you want to be published in magazines, etc, then see the photo editors who attend.

How often do you get to sit in front of the Curator for the SFMOMA or a photo editor from the NY Times, for 20 minutes where the topic of conversation is your work?

Because you might not be aware of it.

Seriously, although even experienced people can benefit from having feedback on a project, the main point of those reviews is to look for opportunities.
