To find the MTF graph for version 6, you had to look on the German site of Kodak to get it. But they have not updated their Deutch site with the new film, so I have yet to see a new MTF graph for GA 100-7. Im wondering if there will ever be one since Kodak is making their film line global with all films having the same name around the world. Has anyone seen a graph for this or have talked to Kodak about the new films MTF? Version 6 reached 100% MTF at 50 lines which made it a very sharp film around 150 lines per mm. That's B&W film range. Not many color neg films get this high. Anyway I emailed Kodak to get an answer, but wondering if anyone already has this info. Im concerned that with the reduction of grain on the new film (PGI 42 vs 45 of old film), they also reduced sharpness. I will give an answer if I hear back from Kodak.

Hello,
That was me that posted the old chart on Photonet, but it was the older version. I called Kodak today and they dont have a new chart for the new version. It doesn't seem like they will be making one.

Eric- would you say sharpness has stayed the same or has it been reduced in accordance to the grain reduction as well?

I have no idea, but if I was interested I would just buy some and give it a try.

I've never been a big fan of techie voodoo, but I can see where some would find it all very interesting.

Good luck.

I asked Kodak to send me a MTF chart for the new version 7 of this film. They sent me back an email today with a chart attached. It doesnt say anywhere in the chart its for version 7 (over an earlier version), but I assume its for the new film. Anyway here it is. Maybe someone can compare it against the old one and see how they differ.

Below is a jpeg of version 6 and the supposed version 7 next to each other. To me it looks like the new stuff has lost quite a bit of sharpness compared to the old.

I have received the new Gold 100 stock in, so I'll shoot a roll of the new and old together and see how they fair. I'll post back here if anyone is interested.

The sun was partially out and my posing buddy was free today. So I shot 3 rolls of film. 1 old Gold 100, 1 new Gold 100, and 1 new Portra 160VC. The sun was perfect today. Slightly overcast with sun peaking through, so it gave light on your face, but not a strong light like high noon clear day sun. Im going to work now to get them to put it through the C41 and I'll scan these tonight.

Looking at Kodaks MTF charts for most of their films. Other then TMAX 100, is there ANY Kodak film that doesn't dip past 20 cycles now? It seems Kodak is no longer making super sharp films anymore.

Why would they? People can't take sharp photos anyway. Use larger format if you are serious about image detail.

There are times when lugging out the medium format is not the best idea. Along with the weight of the body and a few lenses, I deal with the shutter-mirror slap problem which can blurr detail. A tripod is a must regardless of which format you use, but at least at times carrying 35mm with some lenses won't kill you. Carrying medium format on trips is not what I wanna do everytime. But theres a good chance I'll want to make a large blowup from the film.

From what I know today the last 2 films left that are sharper then most is TMAX 100 and Velvia 50 (assuming the new version is the same as the old version).

Take a look at Kodak Vision 2 50D Color Negative 35mm Motion Picture Film: I have been shooting this film in my Leica and C/V cameras and it is impressive! A&I Photo in Los Angeles (and Santa Monica) process it.

Kodak Vision 2 50D MTF, Diffuse RMS Granularity and Sensitometry are here:

I hope to see Kodak produce and market Consumer and Pro C-41 versions of this film.

First off, I don't see any indication that the Old Gold 100 was any better at this than the new one. I don't really put my trust in graphs though. I tend to rate real world results. Remember, you can't get a fifth of the resolution with average contrast that you do with high contrast subjects, so those charts are largely meaningless out there in the real world.

What concerns me is the pronounced warm bias I saw on the Photo.net post, not that I shoot any Gold 100 anyway. I'd say that the improved version of Gold 400 was an improvement though. I would be interested if there are any wedding photographers on here that shoot the stuff that have any opinions as to its performance. The owner of the lab we use said (as of two years ago) that some of his customers swear by the stuff, so there is a limited professional market for the stuff aparantly.

Regards,

~KB

Professionals used to use this film from what Ive read. Its a good film. Ive used it since it was version 1 which was VR-G in 1986. It became Gold 100 in version 2. So its safe for me to say that Gold 100 is the film I've used the most of through out the years. The old version is definately sharper. Look at my other post and you'll see what I ended up with, plus the MTF charts are there for both versions. Contrast was also higher in the old version which would boost the sharpness somewhat.
