That's the intent. Quick check. Appears to be precision printed, just wanted to get second hand confirmation before splurging up on this. He sells sizes for 35mm and 120 as well, each targeted somewhat differently.
It's easier to check enlarger for corner to corner to corner sharpness with negative of simpler forms. If one is produced to be tack sharp, all the better. But otherwise you are right, any negative can be used.
