There are a lot of electric guitarists who would disagree with you....

I find it most interesting how, in some PHOTRIO threads, when some moderators are present, the apparently unwritten rule that "off topic is verboten" gets "enthusiastically" enforced and, in other threads, it's "off topic -- let 'er rip!"

Photrio seems to have a soft spot for wandering into comparisons with the vinyl record and tape recording market comparables.
I'm not sure why, but it usually seems harmless, and tends to signify that the thread is likely to soon peter out.
This thread is certainly long past adding anything useful and informative.

If we are talking about electronic instruments and adding flavor to the guitar and want to add distortion to you guitar be my guest.
But to capture and reproduce everything you are now introducing distortion not only to guitar amp but the entire material.
If it’s Metallica or other electric bands be my guest and do whatever.
Even though the overhead drum microphones would sound better if not reproduced through a tube.

I am a guitar player. In fact my master degree is in classical guitar.
I spent my entire life ear training ear training. The first time i heard a CD i was shocked how close it sounds to the real thing. I started hearing things “on recordings I loved and listened to thousand times” I never heard before. I hear a vibraphone player singing the melody bleeding in the vibe overhead mic. I hear Upright bass and acoustic guitar players tapping their foot.
And again you can have close to that on a tape recording with a nice noise reduction. But digital beats it every time.
Electric instruments… yea who cares? they are already analog “compromised” and it is part of their charm.
But acoustic and space… No contest digital.

I'm not talking about Metallica and the ilk, but about the pre-pedal use.... Fender Tweed and Blackface amps....in rock and blues. Clearly a word apart from classical guitar....but still highly desirable. Many of the finest steel string acoustic players in other genres prefer microphones.... & no digital.... It's another world...& has nothing to do with Kodak & film

The question is do you want to hear the instrument as it sound transparent or do you want a distorted heavily equalized soup of a sound.
I prefer the first option.
No reason to copycat the horrible sounding recording of the past.

....i still say it has nothing to do with Kodak or film....it is Photrio, not Audiotrio .....

And as @MattKing pointed out, the thread has run its course. No doubt we'll have another one next week where we can offer the same arguments yet again and then bicker some more about another of our favorite off-topic topics.

For those who desire to continue the exchange on high-end audio, feel free to file a report and I'll happily split off that chunk of this thread into a new one in the Lounge. Alternatively, consider the DIYAudio forums; they're quite excellent and are home to cliques interest groups of each pursuasion that has so far represented itself in this thread.
