Any tips on scanning curled film on a Nikon 4000 Scanner?

Any available alternative mounting systems for this scanner either commercial or home made?


I've read about duplicating mounts (i.e. similar to a slide mount but shows the full frame and puts tension on the film), but I've never been able to find any for sale.


My current technique involves clipping single frames and mounting in a slide mount.

Otherwise I'll put the film in a heavy stack of books for a few days to try to get it to flatten.

Either method doesn't work that great and usually I'm left with out of focus areas on the scan because the film isn't flat.


Any ideas very welcome.

Does it have a glass holder? Or maybe a wet mount kit would do the job.

I have some Wess AHX500K mounts that do what you describe: they are full frame, and they stretch the film flat using the sprocket holes. I got a few boxes from Adorama, but I haven't seen any recently.

You can get 2x2 pieces of AN glass from focalpoint.com that you could tape the film to. Alternatively you could wet mount to 2x2 glass - scanscience.com sells the bits, including the glasses, if you need them.

Wet mount rocks if you can do it on your scanner...another tip- as it is winter and very DRY is to put your film in a room with a humidifier that is around 40-50% rel h and overnight your film will flatten (I store my films and papers this way). You can leave your film in there sleeves...no problem....here in VT this is the only way I can get good flat scans even with wet mount during the winter months...its just to dam dry!
