Any Experience with 'Firstcall DX Recoder Labels'?

Hi All,

I'm trying to find a method to override DX coding on my point and shoot cameras. I'm far too lazy to make my own. I've found these: http://www.firstcall-photographic.co.uk/firstcall-dx-recoder-labels-iso-125/p744

They are available in various ISO increments. Has anyone had any experience with these? Are they effective and easy to use?

Provided they are stuck on correctly they simply replicate the notation that is used by cassette makers for each speed so yes they will work.

Since this is about P&S cameras I believe some of them can only detect 100 and 400 speed films so it likely depends on the P&S camera model as well.

Thomas, have a look into the cassette compartment of your camera, more specifically at those decoding pins. And have another look at the DX-coding article at Wikipedia. Then you will know if such stickers would make any sense for you.

As alan said check what isos yr camera can actually do and then you can change the actual cartridge rather than using a sticker

For 5 stickers @ 3 pounds I do not see the reason to re-use original cassettes (with all the problems involved), if that is what you refer to.
The stickers are intended to stick onto plain plastic or metal cassettes that are designed for reuse.

Thanks, my camera has 4 decoder pins so stickers would be a benefit. But i was just wondering if anyone had experience with this particular product

Thanks, i wasn't aware that they are re-usable but that is even better!

I did not say the stickers are reusable. Maybe they are.
The idea is to stick them on reusable cassettes.

Thanks! Maybe you will be able to help me with another issue. I have some portra 160VC which I want to try out on my point and shoot. It expired in 2002 and i don't think it was put in the fridge. Should I overexpose by 1 or 2 stops?

Hello Thomas- I just came across your post two years later, so you have probably already purchased the FirstCall labels and figured this all out. However, I did solve the issue of how to reuse the labels. Instead of using the sticky side of the label to attach it to the film canister, instead use a piece of double sided tape (the kind designed to be easily removable). Then you can use one label over and over again as they are made out of foil. I hope this helps!
