I have both a 20/35 AFD and a 35/70 AF and they are beyond reproach. The 20/35 isn't too hot at the 20mm end but from F4 downwards it will give a 12x16 without even breaking sweat. Even the prime 20mm AFD has to be stopped down to F4 to get its best performance. From 24mm right through to 35 is absolutely spot on. I believe the 17/35 AFD is even better at all apertures but have never used one.
The same can be said about the 35/70. Mine is a non AFD version but the optics are the same as the AFD model. From 35/70 it is sharp at all settings. F2.8 onwards.
I have been very pleased with the following Nikon D zoom lenses:
20-35mm f/2.8
35-70mm f/2.8 (not labeled as a D lens but performs like one)
28-70mm f/2.8
80-200mm f/2.8
Just picked up a Nikkor 28-105 f3.5 AD-D D ID FX in mint condition for about $85. Makes for a good studio portrait lens as my high end AF-S 24.70 is to short and my AFS-70-200 is too long and heavy. There are several versions - this is the latest model, makes for a very nice all-around lens for a song.
