I've occasionally thought of using one of these due to the high price of the FD 85 1.8 lenses. With a new-to-me Canon AV-1 camera on it's way, now I need a lens for it. Ken Rockwell had a mini review that said it was sharp at all apertures. Is that true? I was hoping it might be a little soft wide open for head shots.
I have an original chrome-nose FD 100/2.8. Rockwell is right, it is pretty sharp at all apertures. You can always use some sort of soft focus filter if you want a soften things up.
I have an FDn 100mm f2.8 lens and have shot portraits with it for about thirty years, although it's overall at most apertures sharp, like any lens at f4.5 and up not quite as sharp as the smaller apertures, it's perfectly useable for shooting portraits, and although I have an FDn 85mm lens I would say that the 100mm lens is generally more useful, and mine is part of my e.d.c. kit.
