Spend at least two days on foot in and around the Canyon. A Navajo guide is required...they're very responsive to questions. The opportunity is a lot more than photo...best on a solo with your guide.
This was shot from the rim...likely not far from today's road. I don't think there are any camping opportunities in that area, and it's heavily visited by machine-beasts. It's difficult to deal with shadows and clouds in much of the SW because they are usually fast moving and constantly changing...much more challenging than the Sierras. Clearly AA was both patient and lucky...he probably had many disappointments.
