When you release the shutter on any SLR with a "between the lens" shutter, the following has to happen:
1. Shutter closes to keep light from entering the camera via the lens..
2. Mirror goes up to keep light from entering the camera via the viewing screen.
3. Shutter opens, then closes, to make the exposure.
If 2 happened before 1, you'd get inaccurate exposures.
It all happens very fast, and most people don't notice the sequence--I certainly don't, but it does have to happen that way.
