I had fun making the pictures, and hey, I'm beginning to think that is the most important thing we can accomplish.

I know you're tired of looking at my 39 Ford pickup.......so.......I'll consider accepting donations to purchase some other more interesting subject to focus on. I think a 55 Thunderbird would be nice.

Jim, nice pic's with that hybrid lens! At your suggestion I'm waiting for a 72mm +1 diopter to mount to the front of my Voigtlander #4 Euroscop. The damn thing focuses at 46" right now and I'll see what the diopter does. Should put it at about 20". Could be a good portrait lens for the 11x14 and 8x10. Making waterhouse stops as we speak.

Ok, this is really inspirational. I've been doing 4x5 landscape with my lovely Rodenstocks and Schneiders and everything is so ooooo pretty and snip-snap sharp and lovely and all and now...I am just jealous. Until now I kind of fancied trying an old lens one day, but your experiment made me want to just get anything out of eBay and try for the hell of it.

Any recommendations how to best lose less than $100 on something I could try for a softy portrait?

PS. I won't quit lovely and sharp lanscape just yet.

Love the images but reminds me of coming out from under ether anesthesia as a child. Also looks like something I remember form my 60's college days.

To me the lens creates the illusion that the truck is a scale model. A cool lens fer' sure.

Thinking about this. 195mm is a wide angle lens on 8X10 and we're not used to WA lenses with shallow depth. So it's got the orange on the end of a pencil thing going on, then because the depth is so shallow the ground seems to dis-appear out from under the truck, plus it's got all the other weirdness and swirlies happening and it combines to cause an effect that is just downright surreal. Glad it found it's way to me. Anyone else would have had the good sense to throw it in the trash. I'll have to think about other subjects it would excel at making weird. The truck was beginners luck.

How did you calculate the spacing of the groups, the length of the drain pipe? I'm wondering if I take the front and back of my RR and change the spacing it this will happen. I have an old 300 symmar that needs internal cleaning and wonder what would happen if i chaned the spacing between the front and back. You may be onto something here.

Well, as a scientist, I used both SWAG and TLAR to arrive at the spacing. (scientific wild ass guess) (this looks about right)


Try it and see. I doubt the Symmar will get weird. In this case I think there was a lot of dumb luck at play.

If you want to at least have an idea of combinations (but not how they interact with stop position), try Googling an educational site called hyperphysics in Georgia (USA). The Gullstrand's Equation page has a calculation link that is easier to use for 'what if?' with out doing the math by hand and not knowing you made a mistake.
