Here are two photos of my wife take at different times. Both were taken with the same camera and were on the same roll of film.
One is soft and smooth and was taken at the kitchen table with available light coming in from outside.
The second shot is the next evening and was taken using the low light of the room.
My question is about the response of Neopan 400 to different types of light.
Is the first shot just under exposed and thus the soft muted look?
the second shot certainly has much more contrast and "snap"

Does Neopan 400 work better slightly under exposed? Or did I just miss the exposure on the first shot???

Not directly related to what you're doing, but Freestylephoto.biz's film, "Legacy Pro 400," is repackaged Fuji Neopan 400, and it's sold for half the price.

Metering can make a difference, just like printing (or scanning) and kind of lighting. The first one looks softer, probably because of softer light.

I agree with Anon. The light in the first shot is coming from a large source making it softer. The light in the second shot is coming from a small source (bulb) making the light harder and more contrasty. The type of film here likely wouldn't have made a difference. You can always "punch-up" that first shop in PS or the darkroom.

You will see the same effect with any B/W film.
The lighting from electric bulbs will give harder contrast (point source, sharper shadows etc).
