I'm new to shooting long exposures and just picked up a Big Stopper to use with my Hassy 501c. I will be shooting seascapes with both Acros 100, and Portra 120. Do I expose for the shadows and develop for the highlights?

Would adding a 0.6 ND 2 stop soft grad with the big stopper give me 12 stops?

Yes the combination is 12 stops. The exposure scheme you mention works the same with and without the ND filtration, with one caveat, 12 stops light reduction may push the film into the region of reciprocity failure, each film is different, check the manufacturer's technical information in advance.

I did some long exposure with good result along sea side with FP4 + 10 stops (Wratten 3.0) 2 minutes exposure time....early morning. The waves/water looks like oil....

I will have to try that film sometime in the future. I've been concentrating on Acros for long exposures and everything's been wonderful. I have about 20 rolls of Acros left. I think after that's been depleted I'm going to focus on Delta 100 for long exposures. It really sucks that Fuji pulled the plug on this beautiful film.

It should be noted that the OP mentions adding and using a 'soft grad', so the presumed 12 stops will only be where the grad bit is in the frame. The majority will be x amount of stops that the big stopper gives you as I believe they come in various strengths.

I hope this makes sense.

Enjoy!

They have different names.

Little Stopper = 6 stops
Big Stopper = 10 stops
Super Stopper = 15 stops

It is however worth checking the actual strength of the filter, as they can vary a bit from the nominal value. I have a Big Stopper and mine is closer to 10.67 stops.

It will be available on eBay for awhile. How long, I couldn't guess.
