Dear Ole,

It's a gorgeous camera. I used to have one on loan from Gandolfi, but had to give it back.

And of course Eddie at Gandolfi can supply new panels, 5x7 reducing back...

Cheers,

R.

A new one sets you back £3650, a reducktion back £489....

I`d say Ole did pretty damn well...

Congrats Ole, finally you`ll have a working 8x10

The 5x7" is staying, and so is the CI. And I'm keeping the 5x7" reduction back for 8x10" Gandolfi I already have.

But there might well be a nice 18x24cm plate camera for sale soon - with five double plate holders, iris lens mount, and a lens or two.

Amund, that's exactly what I found out myself. I took a quick look at the price of a new camera, divided by 3, and found out it was worth bidding. But I didn't expect to get it!

Seems like the other potential bidders thought the start price was too high. Besides it wasn't lisited in "LF cameras", but in "vintage -> folding"!

Oh - and I might throw in an elderly Gandolfi Minor tripod, too (I have one already).

It's arrived!!!

And what a lovely camera it is... Now to get hold of some lens boards, so I can start putting scratches on it.

Remember that Eddie at Gandolfi can supply these, together with all parts. He even offered to repair my Universal 12x15 inch under guarantee (if I paid shipping). Louis mis-cut the shoe at the bottom of one of the locking rods, about 100 years ago...

What - Eddie supplies scratches?

I believe that the front end on this one is made for Sinar lens boards, about 14x14cm. But I just happen to have a spare front end, for "standard" 14x16.5cm Gandolfi panels - I just need three little metal pieces.

Yeah, the catch was shipping. Camera + holders + box = 65 lb, near enough 30 kg...

If I still lived in the UK I'd have taken him up on it. As it was I made up a replacement for the defective part on the basis of his helpful advice (3 BA threads, anyone?)

Cheers,

R.

No extra charge for scratches. He can supply the three little metal pieces...

Something strange happened in customs too - the value was clearly stated at £1350, yet I was only taxed 23% of £210. I have no idea where they got that figure from, but I'm not complaining.

The tripod is still on the way in a separate package. He offered me to take off £50 if I didn't want the tripod, which is a very cheap Gandolfi Minor tripod. So in a week or so I'll have two...

I watched "Raging Bull" last night on TV. The early fights against Sugar Ray had the new fangled Speed Graphics popping their bulbs.

With your camera it sounds as if it may have been used at John L Sullivan v Gentleman Jim Corbett!

That's when cameras were cameras of course.

...

Ole,

Surely, upon learning of the mistaken duty charge, you immediately notified the tax collectors of their grievous error and offered up the correct amount?

One would not use a Gandolfi Camera to record something as crude as a bout of fisticuffs, methinks...

Inside my camera was a little surprise: The obituary of Arthur Gandolfi, with a history of the firm! The only sports photography mentioned there was cricket matches and horse racing.

My camera seems to have been made in 1981, just before the brothers retired.

That is odd, it's not like Customs to reduce their income! I had a quick look at exchange rates thinking they may have confused the GBP price with USD, EUR or NOK etc and could not see anything obvious that fits... Still, if Norwegian Customs are anything like UK Customs, they will probably arbitrarily re-assess the value of the tripod to £1,500 and charge you tax and duty on that...

Cheers, Bob.

What happened is probably very simple - the guy filling in the form put there a figure from a different package. Now if he wrote on the other form your figure someone else can be for a surprise... In a better case, he made the mistake just in your case. Happened to me too, with no correction after.

Gandolfi history

Dear Ole,
My boyfriend owns an 8x10 Gandolfi. He went from Austria to England to fetch it (in the 1970s) and it was handed over personally by Fred Gandolfi. Unfortunately he did not understand a lot of Fred's English accent - He did not know me back then; I think I could have translated ;-)
Anyway, I am now looking for a history of the Gandolfi cameras and what i have found is rather scarce. Do you think you could scan the obituary and mail it to me?
