won't people ever learn that you don't NEED a huge budget with 100 assistants running around to get a great shot?

maybe I'm just blind, and haven't learned WHAT I NEED TO KNOW. but as a photo major student, my primary goal is to stay UNDER budget(which right now is MY OWN MONEY), and get the shot I want.

When you only have the (many) models for a short period of time and the shot *has* to be made (only one opportunity), you need more people to insure that all requirements happen concurrently. For example, this is why you would have a makup artist for every model vs one for all models. It doesn't take much to rack up a larger body count. That is being professional and why budgets are higher.

Having done some huge shoots, I'll just say this: At the level she is playing at, with the clients she has, it is more necessary than you can imagine, for a myriad of reasons, most of which have to do with client control and talent management.

Exactly. It's a lot less expensive and easier to hire five more assistants than to schedule a reshoot with celebrity models or an entire orchestra getting union scale.
