Just sharing a link to the Annesley colliery. I drove through there yesterday and thought it looked similar to the location of a recent BBC documentary/drama called Sherwood. Looks like the BBC drama was actually shot around here. Very atmospheric.
The colliery appears to have only closed in 2000. The indication I had that a colliery was once there was a single cart with a plaque on it. I found the following archived links fascinating.

It looks like the transcripts from the last link relate to the storyline in the BBC drama, with the story of the wedding party of the Annesley miner corresponding directly to a bit of the drama.
Makes me stop and think about the context, costs, consequences of the decisions made in the 1980's for the "dash for gas", amongst other decisions on the direction of the UK economy. In the BBC docu-drama, there were some additional twists which are particularly interesting, which I would not want to spoil for anyone who has not watched it.
