Over the past year I've gotten into using an anamorphic adapter. My main combination has been an early Helios 44 "Red P" lens with 13 aperture blades, and an SLR Magic Anamorphot 50 1.33x. I used this combination extensively over the summer when I was on a month long photography expedition. I didn't have any time to test this out before the trip. It was just a mad scramble to get everything together and go.
Once I got back and had everything processed, I found that I'm getting a lot of big dramatic lens flares. The part that has me baffled is that these lens flares are unreproducible through the viewfinder. I've tried opening the shutter, placing a some tissue paper over the frame, and pointing it into flashlight or the sun, and I don't see anything resembling what's on the film. I expected to see some sort of internal reflections going on, but I see nothing. Another weird thing that happens is I'll have the camera on a tripod, and I'll take the same shot a few times, and the lens flares will only appear on some of the frames. It's kind of random. This doesn't happen when I use my Pentax-M 50mm f1.7 lens.
Any ideas on what could be going on here, or how to deal with it? The only thing I can come up with is to add a lens hood. As far as the shots I've already taken, I guess I'll just have to go with it and make the flares part on the aesthetic. I'm not sure how acceptable these would appear to other people. Some of the ones where the flares take over the whole frame are too much for me to want to show.
