an odd dream.... any one else had a similiar one?

So last night I had a very odd and vivid dream. Most of my dreams are very vivid. Something Ive been cursed with since childhood.
in the dream I was slightly older perhaps 35-40... I had a distinct impression I was still avidly doing photography, no one famous but I can remember having done some shows and was teaching photography in some form.
I remember having an accident occur. something fairly tragic.... the exact action that occured I cant quite place, some sort of sickness or ailment. The end result being I lost my eyesight. It was a tremendously emotional thing. I remember feeling complete hopelessness and loss of purpose. So much of my life revolves around my visual perceptions/creations/experiences.
maybe this is an entirely taboo thing to even speak of on a photography forum but then again all lines are meant to be crossed and/or blurred.
Anyone ever thought about this prospect? As to what you would do? would your creative impulses be redirected towards another passion? music perhaps?

just curious if anyone has put thought to something like this

Reminds me of Dead Link Removed who is completely blind in his right eye and over 80% blind in his left.

It reminds me of Matise, who as he lost his sight began to work in other media.. including construction paper...

I guess I'd become a sculptor... I've always been drawn by the sheer mass of a large chunk of rock waiting for me to throw myself at it...

Never had a "gone blind dream" .. but plenty of other weird stuff... like anyone else.

Just to give you a heads up on the dream, after googling a couple of dream interpretation web sites the loss of sight or going blind in a dream is representative of a fear of going from wealth to abject poverty.

As far as the question goes I guess I could only decide on what I would do after I went blind.

I wanted to be musician. After being wounded in war, and after losing 70% of functions of my right arm, I had to gave up of that desire. So, I won't even try to think the way as it is in question!!!!

Interesting...maybe you should go get your eyes checked, stop something before it starts...or it could be a sign of losing your vision...would be just as emotional a feeling I think.

Since so much of quality-of-life revolves around sight and since I'm prone to depression perhaps at best, this is a frightening thought. Your first thought is that it would be a deep endless valley, but we humans are somewhat resiliant. I suppose I would move to the piano bench and spend many hours there. Hope I never find out.

Raku fired pottery. I loved the primitive stack of fire bricks and (big) propane torch firing, then burying the pots in the ground and covering them with old leaves and grass. A simple white glaze pulls chemicals out of the clay and adds the subtlest of colours, while any areas not glazed turn a beautiful flat black because of being starved of oxygen while buried. A hit and miss method sighted people can't truly control.

If totally incapacitated, I'd write.

Strange dreams are a function of mental or physical "input". The physical side can be controlled by adjusting the ratio of red to green chillis, giving up moonshine, or giving up other controlled substances. The mental side is (to paraphrase the old wine ads done by Orson Wells) a matter of never bottling a worry before its time.

Personally, I'll deal with whatever incapacities that might come along when they do. When that happens, I'll either be called "courageous" or a wimp. Who knows? But, posing nudes by touch does have a certain appeal.

No. But I seen to dream a lot about having a huge cigar and where I'm a hot dog chasing a doughnut. I'm always a "foot long" hot dog. I'm sure they're meaningless.

Dreams are often the subconscious making visual stories about what we are thinking about.

I'd just interpret yours as since you have a love of photography, you subconsiously worry that something may stop you from being able to do it.

Doesn't mean it's a premonition, just that you have been subconsciously worried about losing the ability to do what you love.

Thats not a dream, its a fantasy.

Besides a donut is just a hot dog made of dough rolled in a circle. Meaning that you are gay, with a big cigar.

First, I wouldn't get too worked up over a dream. I think Mike may have hit it when he asked what you had to eat (or drink).

But to answer your question (and I am twice your age): Have I thought about this? Yes.

I think everyone thinks about these things past a certain age. Once one realizes that they are not, in fact, immortal, or indestructable while living, one thinks about a lot of things.

Eyesight diminishes, hearing diminishes, etc. It's a fact of life; we can't do too much about it, beyond corrective lenses (and other therapies) and hearing aids, etc.

As for actual blindness or deafness, that's another level. And, it is scary!! What would I do? Don't know exactly, but I guess I would have no choice but to deal with it.

I am an amatuer photographer and musician. If one faculty failed, I would obviously revert to what I could do. If both failed, well, I'd likely be very old anyway.

I don't mean to sound flippant about this, but I would advise you not to worry about these things. All one can do is take care of themselves and be careful. And, if something happens (as in your dream: an accident) then you will find that we humans can have a remarkable capacity to adapt.

And lay off the midnight pizzas!

There are some of us who are already living your dream. My eye sight is rapidly deteriating, I am no longer able to walk on my own, (power chair) my hands and feet are so numb I can no longer drive a car, remove and replace tiny screws in a camera shutter and my motorcycles sit idle, batteries charged tanks full and spotless just waiting for me. I have a thing called Diabetes and though my Doctor, family and myself continue to do everything possible to stop it, it gets worse dailey. I pretty much understand what my future holds, and I'll play the hand I've been dealt to best of my ability. But when it is all gone, It won't be the end of the world for me, just another change in my life to get used to. I guess I don't have too much faith in dreams, but I am glad I can still have them! Charlie...........

I found it hard to find my faith until I went back to sleep......

I also have dreams very similar, and am probably around the same age as you. When I loose my eyesight in my dreams, I start dreaming with my senses- this is where it gets strange----- I start sculpting with clay and I can smell the type it is and feel the warmth or cold of it (again this is in my dreams). Then, a couple of times as I am having one of these dreams, I dream I fall on ice and someone ice skates over all my fingers. I am still dreaming in senses but can not even sculpt. I chalk these up to creative anxiety.

I think Tanya has hit the nail on the head... creative anxiety.

I have always had very vivid and 'active' dreams, too... my hubby says it's the 'creative' thing. I used to have a recurring dream... very strange, almost like I was reliving something from a past that was not mine! I could even remember the smells in that dream. Every time I'd have that dream I'd think to myself "Oh... it's that dream again"... kinda like watching a re-run on TV.

Don't worry too much about this dream... dreams are where all the insecurities we supress during the day come out to play. If you have the dream again, remind yourself that it is a dream, and look at it in the same way you would watch a movie... entertainment; nothing more, nothing less.

Damn Sorry to here this Charlie....afraid I watched my mother go through pretty much everything you described. She beat cancer (3 different boughts with that) managed to live 12 years after it was discovered, but in the end the Diabetes took it's tool. Can tell from your post, you have a good spirit, so don't lose that...it will carry you far and remember we are all having good thoughts for you. Sorry to hear about your health problems...I echo what Mike said...hopefully someday this will be history. Growing old isn't for the faint of heart.

charlie... Im so sorry to hear this. Although I am very moved by how you are dealing with it. strong character.
I hope I didnt come across as a whiney little kid. (if so I didnt intend to).

Hey Scootermm.
Every thing is cool, I simply wanted to make the point that there are a lot of folks just hanging on that are well on their way to to living out such a dream. I am one of the lucky ones, I have had a wonderful life and done many things others can only dream of. I simply can't forget all the others out there having to deal with far heavier loads than my own! I wouden't wish Diabetes on my worst enemy! Heck, tomorrow may be the day they find a cure or a way to slow it down, I sure woulden't want to miss that!! Charlie........
