I just picked up the "American Society of Media Photographers" annual, 1953.
It has samples from over 30 photographers, including W. Eugene Smith, Richard Avedon, Dorothea Lange and others. Each group of photos includes a narrative by the photographer.
I have not gotten through it all yet, but so far I have really enjoyed Fritz Goro's 'Tradition' and Walt Wiggins 'Outlaw Horse'. The narratives as much as the photographs.
